Hi
My ggg aunty Elizabeth Emily Goodacre Roberts was born on the 24th December 1867 in Old Ford, Bow, London, daughter of Thomas Roberts and his wife Mary Ann nee Walder. She was still living with her parents in the 1881 census in Holborn, London, aged 14, a tailoress.
Elizabeth witnessed her sister Kate Roberts wedding in 1886 and her sister Margaret Minnie Roberts wedding on 7 July 1890 at St Alban The Martyr, Holborn, London. Margaret and her husband Charles Anstey's addresses was given as 31 and 33 Portpool Lane. The Ansteys were mistranscribed as Asher on the 1891 census of Clerkenwell. Elizabeth would have been 22 by then and signed her name as "Elizabeth Emily Roberts".
Her mum died in 1886 in 25 Evelyn Buildings, Holborn and her dad died in 1889 in Holborn Infirmary, Islington, formerly of 25 Evelyn Buildings according to death cert.
However I am having a job and a half trying to locate her after she witnessed her sisters wedding in July 1890. Her brother Frederick William Roberts wed in 1890 in Clerkenwell, and her other sister Harriet Ada Roberts wed in Clerkenwell in 1900. I cannot find Elizabeth on the 1891 census taken 5 April, only 9 months after she witnessed her sisters wedding. I have tried all forename, surname variants, and birthplaces on 1891 to no avail. I have also looked at any Elizabeth or Emily Roberts marriages in the Islington and Holborn districts and cross referenced all spouses and looked them up on the 1891 and 1901 census, and none of the birthplaces match.
I have also checked any Elizabeth Roberts deaths in London 1890-1900 who were born inbetween 1866 and 1871 to no avail either. All her other siblings are accountered for. I have looked at all avenues to no avail. What if I did a blanket search of the 1891 census for the Holborn areas of the actual scanned original images as the electronic indexes arent always reliable?
I have also checked all Elizabeth Emily Roberts marriages in Greater London 1890-1904.
Please help me out of a very tight situation. I know every single detail on her parents and siblings after July 1890, but not Elizabeth Emily, yet I know her DOB, that is a start.
I hope she wasnt abducted by alien E.T's ggreat grandfather lol lol.
Thanks
Ben

As others have said, there are many possible listings for your relative on 1891. This one here looks an odd surname, as if there has been some mistranscription (?); but the forename Elizabeth, age 24, place of birth Bow, current residence Islington and occupation (draper's assistant) give a reasonable match.
Name: Elizabeth Brorke Age: 24 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867 Relation: Boarder Gender: Female Where born: Bow, London, England Civil Parish: Islington Ecclesiastical parish: St Barnabus Town: London County/Island: London Country: England Street address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage:
Education:
Employment status: View Image Registration district: Islington Sub-registration district: Highbury ED, institution, or vessel: 36 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Anna M Baker 28 Elizabeth Brorke 24 <<<<<< Lucy Brown 23 Eliza Griggs 26 Mary Hayman 38 Grace Holloway 39 Annie E Upton 28 Ernest J Walter 1 George Walter 38 Janet A Walter 32 William G Walter 5
However, the most likely mistranscription is for Brooke, not Roberts.

Hi all
Thanks for your replies. The one who was a staff nurse looks a good match. Elizabeth didnt have a brother William unfortunately but I shall definately look into the other ones. In 1881 she was a tailoress.

could this be her in 1891, the age is out by 5 years though. She is a teacher at a school for the deaf and dumb.
Although she is transcribed as Elizabeth E M Roberts. The middle name on the image actually looks like it could be emily.

Hi Siobhan.
Thanks for the EEM Roberts one but having looked, ite image says Elizabeth Emma MacKenzie Roberts so not the right one unfortunately.
If she was a witness to her sister wedding in Holborn in July 1890, she couldnt have gone far as the 1891 census was taken 9 months afterwards.

Hi Ben,
Going back to your original question, it is difficult to advise on how to take the search further, because you have looked very comprehensively.
Here are some thoughts (made in sympathy, hope the tone doesn't come over as hectoring!):
1) you suggest trawling the census transcripts for 1891 for the Holborn district - personally, I hate trawling, because there is always the nagging doubt that it is pointless if she moved away (round the world in 80days?) or died or married or her surname is so poor on the census image that it is illegible (NB you say you have tried variants - have you tried looking with no surname, or with no forename?) - also, I have in the back of my mind that each ED is several thousand people!
2) You have looked for Elizabeth Emily Roberts marriages in the Greater London area - since the record on the 1881 census was Eliza M., is there any possibility that her marriage is also recorded as Eliza?
3) I nudged a thread on "cheaper access to certificates" earlier on this evening - Olde Crone had some strong words on the mistranscriptions she found on one marriage certificate, by comparing the documents obtained from the parish copy, the local register office copy, and the GRO copy. Have you considered applying to the local register office(s) to see whether you can find a marriage there?
4) Abducted by aliens - hmm, well in the sense that aliens are simply non-British subjects (!) does anyone in your family have any whisper of any relative who moved overseas?
All the best - it doesn't look like you're going to be finding a quick answer on this one. Over and out.
