Hmm. Both Julie and I thought that was Alice with her mother in 1901. But this is her? -- i.e. she was 7 in 1901, not 12?

Name: Alice Cross
Age: 7
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1894
Relation: Granddaughter
Gender: Female
Where born: Whitechapel, London, England

Civil Parish: Bethnal Green
Ecclesiastical parish: St Simon Zelotes
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Bethnal Green
Sub-registration district: Bethnal Green, East
ED, institution, or vessel: 20
Household schedule number: 384

Alice Bishop 48
Henry H Bishop 62
Alice Cross 7

So I'm not mistaken about this being them in 1891? --

Name: Joseph Cross
Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Charlotte
Gender: Male
Where born: Northamptonshire, England

Civil Parish: Bethnal Green
Ecclesiastical parish: St John
Town: London
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Bethnal Green
Sub-registration district: Bethnal Green East
ED, institution, or vessel: 12b

Joseph Cross 29
Charlotte Cross 27
Charlotte Cross 5
Mary A Cross 9/12

-- no William, Edward or Alice. (Oops, Mary Ann was 9/12 in 1891, not 9.5 yrs.)

Not having any clue what the birthdates of the children you named are (you haven't said; don't you know?), it isn't really possible to offer any more assistance in finding them. Also don't know how you know the children didn't leave Bethnal Green, e.g. how to rule out that Albert Edward Cross in a Barnardo's home in 1891.

If you do have birth records for the kids, do offer up their years of birth, and maybe some search engine trickery could be employed to find 'em. Without at least an approximate age, not much hope.

Charlotte called herself "single" in 1901:

Name: Charlotte Cross
Age: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864
Relation: Boarder
Where born: Bethnal Green, London, England

Civil Parish: Bethnal Green
Ecclesiastical parish: St James the Less
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Bethnal Green
Sub-registration district: Bethnal Green, East
ED, institution, or vessel: 3
Household schedule number: 304

Alice Mary Cross 12
Charlotte Cross 37

So separation might sound more likely than death.

It helps to know that he went by Joseph, not William, btw! -- at least in the the 1891 census.

Don't see the other Cross children in 1901 either. There are only Mary Ann and Charlotte in 1891 -- aged 5 and 9.5, likely independent by 1901; was Edward younger?
