Remember that most families could not afford gravestones/inscriptions.

Derek..

I am back on under my own login - Pam is a friend.. I've looked at that site, but can't see any burial sites listed for Thurso, or Caithness, am I missing something?

hi pamela try highlandfhs.org.uk they have a search by surname and they say how many with which surname are in each graveyard no dates but they sell the MI booklets it may be well worth joining the society

Many thanks Mhari, at least they stayed put in one community for a while, so I would get quite a few from one booklet!

General Registration didnt start in Scotland till 1855 so, as already stated, your relying on MI's or burial registers but even then you wont get a lot of information.

Plans are afoot to transcribe and digitalis the burial and mort cloth records found in the OPR but these wont be ready for till the end of the year at least.

Someone at this website

http://scotfamtree.11.forumer.com

Has the booklets. Its in the subscription section though (£10 for the year) but its a worth while website with a large amount of materials and expertise. Well worth the tenner.

Hope thats of some help

Janice...

you mean there really are no death records indexed pre 1855?

I thought I just hadn't found the site!

I was actually thinking quite a while pre 1855, lol !

Hi Diane,

You could try putting their names into the wills search.

1841 census tell you anything?

What about the death of a sibling after 1855. Scottish death certs have parents' names on.

Good luck!

I'm new to Scottish ancestor research, mine having mostly been an unadventurous lot !

Having paid to access Scotland's people... there are no death records pre 1855?

Where would I go next for these?
