My Great Grandfather, George Whitecross, born in Aberdeenshire. He married Mary Alice Brown of Gretford England, the marriage took place in Rotherham, had 1 son also George then moved to Salford and had a further 8? children. Died mid 40's, youngest child Edith was 2 (my Grandmother). It states on 1881 census he was born in Scotland but no place. He was born abt 1845. I am trying to trace his parents. Anyone know how to find this mans family in Scotland?

Try here...

Set the year to 1841, the surname to Whitecross, and the birth county to Aberdeenshire.

Have you traced him on the other census to see if he ever gives a district?

If you have, do they ever have visitors staying with them? Sometimes visitors can be family members so are worth looking for in other census.

I'm with Suzanne though. If you dont already have his marriage cert, order it and it will tell you his fathers name and occupation which will make it easier tracking the family back to Scotland.

Once you have his fathers name you could look on IGI for any possible matches and then try to track the families through the census to either count them in or out. If the parents remained in Scotland and died after 1855 then you'll be able to view their death certs on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk (for a small price) and be able to get back another generation.

Be aware though, that Scottish general registration didnt start in Scotland till 1855 so you wont get a birth cert for George though there may be a baptism record, it just wont be too detailed.

Hope thats of some help
