Well done K, I just had a look and that census is fascinating and I'm pretty sure you are right. The boat was called 'Seven Brothers'

Boat people had a hard life. I knew one couple well and she talked of unloading 50 tons of coal from their boat by hand, they carried coal from the midlands to London, and both their sets of parents were boat people with horse drawn boats.

Hello Linda......

This is the only THOMAS FISHWICK who fits the bill

1861 census

The Seven Brothers. Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Wigan

Thomas Fishwick/head/age 26/ Master / born Lathom . Lancashire

Catherine Fishwick / wife / age 22 / born Crosby, Lancs

Jane Fishwick / daughter / age 6 / born Liverpool
Catherine Fishwick / daughter / age 5/ born Liverpool
Agnes Fishwick / daughter / age 2 / born Liverpool

on the 1871 census the family is living at

Thomas / head / Porter labourer / born Lathom
Catherine / wife / born Crosby
Agnes / daughter / age 12 / born Liverpool

I feel quite certain, that Emily is in fact Emma.

Emma was of course was married in 1881, young Thomas is a 12 year old in The Industrial School at Everton.......I willtry to trace the other children if you wish.......

I think these are the death entries for Mum and Dad

Thomas Fishwick / age 45 / Dec 1877 / Wigan / vol 8c page 2

Catherine Fishwick / age 55 / Dec 1894 / Wigan/ vol 8c page 76

Hope this helps

Boat people often married each other and then worked the boat as a team. I looked at all the other boats in Wigan but her father wasn't there.

Linda do you have Emma's birth cert? This could be her, you could always ask for a reference check of father's name and if wrong they would only charge £3 instead of £7.
If her father was a canal boatman and worked the Leeds Liverpool Canal she might even have been born on his boat. I love the canals and their history, we have a canal boat, and I have met many 'boat people' (sadly nearly all gone now) and I know that women did give birth in the tiny back cabin. There are 2 Boat Musems, Ellesmere Port and Stoke Bruerne both have good web sites, just google for them.

Emma Fishwick

I'll keep looking for Thomas

I coudln't see them in the census, and the only birth I could see list her as born Wigan and if correct would give her mother's name and maiden name

I am trying to find out any information about a Thomas Fishwick. I know his daughter Emma was born in 1862 in St Helens and on her marriage certificate to Omar Lowe he is down as a Boatman.
