I have very limited information but here it goes... My gran Olive Ethel Pearce born 1916 Ystrad Mynach/Gelligiaer, Monmouthshire, Wales she married Thomas Richard Jones 1913. I would like to trace back my grans family. I believe her mother to be Maria? Please can someone help me? I would be so grateful
sincerely
Natalie

Hi Joan
Thank you so much for replying. Yes I do believe that is it. Without be sounding like a fool, do i have to order a copy of that birth record to take the next step? without anything definite info and i lost information copied from records on an old computer, i have just ended up covering old ground and going around in circles.
sincerely
Natalie

Natalie ordering a cert is the only way to ensure that you follow the correct family.

Thanks Claire
I have many maybes... but that's it!
what information will be on the birth certificate altogether?

Diane

Diane Report 6 Jan 2008 20:38

You now could look for marriages for a Davies and a Pearce, but with so little to go on, you really do need her birth certificate to get on the right track.

To order, go to the GRO government site, and with the info on here, you can order one for £7 if you quote the volume and page numbers. They come within a week at the moment.

Thank you so much, i will order one asap.
I just looked through some more records and there is a maria davies in the 1901 census living in Newport. could this then be my great grandmother? age seems to fit in.
im sooo sorry to be a pain

Forever Gratefull

Natalie I'm in Wales & I wouldn't attempt a guess at a Davies, Williams or Jones!

Potentially other siblings....

Births Sep 1914 (>99%)

Pearce William J Davies Newport M. 11a 703

Births Mar 1917 (>99%)

PEARCE George Davies Newport M 11a 567

The census is a bit of a guess, given there are a few Davies in Wales and you have no other information to cross-check to confirm or eliminate... freebmd was "too busy" a minute ago, but i'll look for the marriage again...

Diane

Diane Report 6 Jan 2008 20:51

Hang on!

If you get the marriage cert of your Grandmother and Grandfather you'll get both their fathers... which may be more help in tracing 2 families in the census?

Especially if you aren't sure of her birthdate for the record found...

Needle in haystack or what!!

Could she have been May?

Perhaps the birth cert is the best choice for now.. lol

Marriages Mar 1910 (>99%)

Davies Maria Pontypool 11a 229
PEARCE William John Pontypool 11a 229

There's also 2 Margaret Davies marrying Mr Pearces in Cardiff... and of course probably more going back earlier...

Tis indeed a bit of a haystack!

Diane

Diane Report 6 Jan 2008 20:56

Natalie... I don't think you mean that Olive was born in 1916, and married in 1913...??

My gran olive maiden name pearce born i thought in 1916 but it seems 1915 married my grampy thomas Jones. they lived in cardiff after the war which is the house i remember. Other than that my gran had sibblings. I was told that my gran was brought up in gelligare and or Ystrad Mynach. I belive her mother to be maria? and it seem maiden name davies.
sorry have i confused matters?

Diane

Diane Report 6 Jan 2008 21:11

Natalie.. ah ok.. no its me reading too quickly! so you think Thomas Jones was born in 1913, in which case they were probably married after 1936, do you know if they married pre or post the war?

If we find the other siblings we might be able to be more sure about the marriage of Maria Davies that I found, depending how SURE you are of her name, depends if you want to fork out the £7 for it or not!?

Finding your gran's marriage is slightly more timeconsuming as the marriages are not yet indexed for that period, and so its a quarter by quarter search... (Dee is offering to do some on this board, but would be better to give her the best chance if you can find out a more approximate date..)

<-- gone looking for siblings whilst you read this!
