Hi Sarah

Do you have his marriage cert to give father's name?

Sarahs reply via PM....
thankyou very much. We are going to have to go and look to find out father and mother to each side to go further . many thanks sarah xxx
My reply to Sarahs PM...
Sarah
The only SURE way to find both parents is to buy the mariage cert (£7)
Info on marriage certs gives you BOTH fathers names and occupations also addresses at time of Marriage and of course correct ages of the bride and groom. Sometimes if your lucky....you might get a hint with who the witnesses were to the marriage!
Theres no short cuts to be made with this infuriating hobby! You could find yourself with loads of info but all about the WRONG family!
Once you get back to the 1901 census it shouldnt cost any more money on buying the certs.
I would hate to find out that my great great great great grandmother Matilda wasnt mine after all the hard work i put into finding out all about her complicated life and her three husbands! The children she had and the children she lost....Those odd £7 were worth it!
I wish you luck but have fun.
Kind regards Gerri x

You cant always go by ages on census either. People often couldnt read in the old days. They wouldnt know if their name wasnt spelt correctly. I got a marriage cert today for a second marriage for my husbands gt grandmother To try to verify her age.
On her first marriage cert her age was several years different to the census. On her second one I suspect the year of marriage was incorrect . There was a line next to 0 making it look like married 1899 instead of 1890. If you took the 1890 marriage the ages were nearer the mark and she was living with the man on 1891 census.
In every case the only consistant thing was her fathers name and occupation. Seaman merchant service plus she was living with her married dau. my husbands grandmother in 1901.
So dont take everything even bmds as fact if there is a question things dont appear correct.
Its best if possible to order from the local reg office. This office sent their bmds every 3 months to gro so mistakes occured in copying and those in gro copying them too. The local office is more likely to be accurate
