I have just found out that my James Milton born 1868 in Hillingdon, Middx went from London to Sydney on the boat Austral 2/12 1892. He age was given as 24 and he was a gardener.
Do census exist for Australia? or anything else useful to track him. He reputedly died in a threshing machine accident but no idea of when or if this is true.
Any help/ideas much appreciated.

Hi Louise, apparently there are no census records for Australia, the Government, in their wisdom, decided they should be destroyed once the data had been collated!!!! Their is a BMD site for NSW, you can search for free but you need to pay of course to receive the certificate, try this, www.bdm.nsw.gov.au Good luck, Marlene.

I have had a look on NSW BDM and there are quite a few James Miltons.
one marriage possibility is
6774/1894 Milton James F to Pearson Alice M in Taralga.
Next closest marriage was 1911.
As to deaths the same lots of them would need parents names.

Cheers

Hi Louise,

What we do have is the state Library of NSW that has an online service call "ASK A LIBRARIAN". you can request info on our electoral returns. They will contact you via email and yes they do post info overseas.http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/services/family_history/
(on right side of page)

Ancestry.com.au also have some electoral rolls listed as well, unfortunately I let mine lapse or I could look for you.

State Records NSW also have an online family history area with info on immergration, convict pardons etc.
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/indexes_online_3357.asp

http://ryerson.arkangles.com/notices.php
for some deaths recorded in the newspapers, Sydney

http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/SuggestLogon.asp?K=SQLSERVER_ODBC_SERVER&R=Service%20not%20available%20[Microsoft][ODBC%20Driver%20Manager]%20Data%20source%20name%20not%20found%20and%20no%20default%20driver%20specified

for national archives australia, log in as a guest, have found some good migration records and army records in the past.

Please also note that it was not uncommon for people to travel to diferent states to follow work as Australia was still building itself then.

Good Luck, Louisa

Hi Louise, Following on from Ingrid & Marlene's good work - there's a JOY MURRIN'S Transcription service. She visits NSW BMD and will search any given details you provide -her fee from $7.cheaper than buying certs......... Also -the NSW State Library has an 'Ask a Librarian' service (query form on-line -they will check their records incl. 'newspaper death/ accident notices' and electoral rolls (past & present) ..........Hopefully they will be able to tell you if your relative settled In NSW after his arrival. ........ Valerie (WA)
