Whaddaya think of this guy in 1891?

Name: Tom Jones
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Relation: Boarder
Gender: Male
Where born: Monmouthshire, Wales

Civil Parish: Hathersage
Ecclesiastical parish: St Michael
Town: Hathersage
County/Island: Derbyshire
Country: England

Occupation: minor in the tunnel
Condition as to marriage: single

Registration district: Bakewell
Sub-registration district: Tideswell
ED, institution, or vessel: 5

37
Annie Baker 3
Glen Baker 34
Jane Baker 37
Richard Baker 33
Tom Jones 35
Ali Smith 24
Black Tom Smith 40
George Wart 24

The other big occupation on those pages is "railway minor" (spelled sic).

It says single -- but he was a boarder, who would know or care?

It sounds like maybe a travelling railway gang -- excavating railway tunnels? Ties in with his trade, probably more lucrative than coal mining, would explain the absences ...

In 1901, we have:

Name: Thomas Jones
Age: 47
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1854
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales

Civil Parish: Basingstoke
Ecclesiastical parish: St Michael and All Angels
Town: Basingstoke
County/Island: Hampshire
Country: England

Registration district: Basingstoke
Sub-registration district: Basingstoke
ED, institution, or vessel: 2
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 142A

Ancestry has completely screwed that one up ... found the right image finally. Occupation is "navvy", i.e. railway labourer. Every worker in the long list, with a wide range of ages, is shown as single; bad assumption / carelessness on someone's part, I'd think.

I like him. Starts out matching the occupation, and explains the absences.

Household schedule number: 207

Elizabeth Goodall 36
Mary A Jones 30 - lodger, widow, laundress
Thomas Jones 6

Ew.

It only occurred to me to search for "Tom" when I was looking at a Thomas for the father, and he had a son Tom. You don't often run across nicknames in the censuses, and it doesn't occur to Ancestry to return Toms for Thomas.

But serially ... don't you think he fits? And what does it matter what either of us thinks? I do wish it worked that way though: genealogy by logic.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 9 Jan 2008 22:16

ahhh but then all genealogist would be female?

Henry

Henry Report 10 Jan 2008 09:21

Hello again, just found more info, Thomas's first child was Henry, born 19th Nov 1884 in Whitwood Yorks,
this is two full years before Thomas & Elizabeth married. The birth was recorded 2nd Jan 1885.Pontifract Castleford Yorks.
Does this mean Thomas was from Yorkshire?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Jan 2008 13:06

You have the details? Father Thomas Jones, mother Elizabeth Edwards? (edited -- I said Thomas Roberts at first. I can only thank my stars there is no Welsh in me.)

Just to be sure Elizabeth was his mother. Other possibility is that Thomas was previously married. Thomas-Elizabeth marriage cert should specify what their status was at time of married (i.e. if widowed).

Name: Henry Jones
Year of Registration: 1885
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Pontefract
County: Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire
Volume: 9c
Page: _31

Have to check the image for page number if ordering certificate. Or that's what you've got now?

Henry

Henry Report 10 Jan 2008 23:15

KathrynB, I received Henry's B.C. this morning.
It shows Elizabeth Jones formerly Edwards as mother, Thomas Jones as father coal miner.
On the marriage Cert. Thomas as batchelor, Elizabeth as spinster. Thanks for sticking with me.
