I have knowledge of three Anns born in the area of Barkby - Ann Ilston christened 15 May 1803, Barkby. Parents John Ilston & Mary.
& Ann on 29 NOV 1812 Syston,
with parents Thomas and Mary
& Ann on 28 JAN 1810 Syston, Parents Edward and Ann

Were they all called Ann Illston - does anyone know?

I really need to be totally sure, which is MY Ann, who married James Steel - I may post another thread & ask some 'eliminating' questions.

Unless anyone has any ideas?

Hi Dianne

Many thanks for all the info.

I believe that you are probably correct in assuming that George is Anns Uncle, but I am not sure wher exactly in the tree he fits yet......

I know that MY Ann was born 1803 and not 1812 (although I suspect that Ann IS a relative somehow......MY Ann is :
Ann Ilston christened 15 May 1803, Barkby. Parents John Ilston & Mary.

And, I believe that this is 'John' : John born to Thomas and Mary in 1773 - from the IGI.
also : John has a brother: - George - (Anns uncle) (?)

So I really need to find details of other children born to John & Mary Illston and I alsoneed to find details of Johns parents (Thomas & Mary) other children......if you /anyone would like to help with this, it would be most appreciated.

Kind regards
Gill

From Diane

Have been trying to establish the relationship of Ann Steele nee Ilston to George who appears in the 1841 census with her. I do not think that George is her grandfather but more likely her uncle. Have found the following baptism records for Barkby with parents Thomas and Mary Illston.
1 Joseph 17 April 1768
2 George 20 November 1770 which would fit in with the 1841 census ? uncle
3 Thomas 02 October 1772 possibly Ann's father
4 John 06 march 1774 ? married Ann Needham in 1799 in Queniborough
5 Winefred 05 January 1776 possibly married William Cook in 1797 in Syston
6 Mary 09 October 1777 possibly married Edmund Hopewell on 6 Ju;y 1802 in Syston
7 William 15 August 1779

Looking at the baptism record I found for Ann Illston 1812 in Syston on 29 November 1812 her parents were THOMAS AND MARY not beyond the realms of possibility for Thomas to be a father at 40

Hope this helps let me know what you think
Best wishes
Diane

I think that the 1841 age for Ann is incorrect as everything else fits.
I would also say that George could well be her uncle as there is one born 1770 in Barkby with parents Thomas and Mary and a John born to Thomas and Mary in 1773 - from the IGI.

Thanks Andy

I think for now, I will dismiss the idea that Henry & Maria are relatives of the Steele's -

I may come back to them at a later date.

Many thanks for your help.

The only marriage I can find for a Henry Bottoms in Leicestershire 1841-1851 is
William Henry Bottoms 1844 possible wife Maria Green
Could be a mistake by the enumerator - wrote son-in-law and then realised he was wrong.

Hi everyone

I can see why it is so easy to get 'carried away' with enthusiasm!!!!
when you find out a bit of info that leads you somewhere else - you just want to carry on & on.......... I am really enjoying it - hope you are too.

In the absence of certificates, here are the FACTS so far:

I have in my tree an Ann ? who married James Steel in 1828 in Barkby
I know that they have a daughter - also named Ann c1827 (pos out of wedlock).

In 1861 census, Ann has living with her married daughter Ann, who has married a Thomas Orton and her 2 children Sarah & Thomas. and living with them, her other 3 unmarried daughters.

Ann Orton 34 born Barkby
Sarah Ann Orton 9
Thomas Orton 4
(Anns husband has died)

Ann Steel 60 born Leicester - Widow-head of house - (this makes Anns d.o.b c1801.)

Elizabeth Steel 22 born Barkby
Mary Steel 25 born Barkby
Sarah Steel 31 born Barkby

- having looked through all the finding so far, I believe that this is MY Ann: -
Ann Ilston christened 15 May 1803, Barkby. Parents John Ilston & Mary.

Ann Illston and James Steell married 20 Feb. 1828, Barkby.
(daughter Ann born in c1827)? - out of wed-lock?

The following are NOT facts - just 'guesswork':

1841 Census - not sure this is the right Ann - needs to be confirmed - as I had Anns birth as 1803 not 1811 !
Ann Steel Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1811
Gender: Female
Where born: Leicestershire, England
Civil Parish: Barkby Hundred: East Goscote
County/Island: Leicestershire Country: England
Registration district: Barrow upon Soar
Sub-registration district: Syston
Household Members:
George Hstor 70 (George Illston) Ann's granddad?
Ann Steel 30
Elisabeth Steel 2
Mary Steel 7
Sarah Steel 11
Thomas Steel 9
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 592; Book: 5; Civil Parish: Barkby; County: Leicestershire; Enumeration District: 1; Folio: 6; Page: 7; Line: 6; GSU roll: No GSU Number listed for piece: 592.

I think at aged 14 - daughter Ann was living in another household as a servant.

1851 census
New Bridge St., St. Mary, Leicester
Ann Street, head, widow, 50, laundress
Sarah, dau, 21, dressmaker
Thos., son, 19, labourer
Mary, dau, 15, glove stitcher
Elizabeth, dau, 12, glove stitcher
All born Barkby.

All the 'names' fit & George Illston is listed in these census records, BUT, Ann;s estimated birth is 1811 - thats quite a bit out from 1803???

Does anyone have any thoughts?
Gill

Just went to have another look and found the ones that Diane found. Didn't realize that Syston was so close. Could be!
Diane, just notice the 1812 one had parents Thomas & Mary, didn't it?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Jan 2008 15:01

Gillian, remember that ages on the 1841 census are rounded down to the nearest 5 for those over 15 years old. If Ann was listed as 30 it means she could have been anything from 30-34 so born 1807-1811.
I know that still doesn't match the 1803 birth that I found, will have another look.

Diane Report 23 Jan 2008 14:52

There is this Ann

28 JAN 1810 Syston, Leicester, England Parents Edward and Ann

or this
29 NOV 1812 Syston, Leicester, England
with parents Thomas and Mary
but none in this time scale in Barkby the only other Ann Ilsons listed are in 1818 and 1826. The dates given are for the baptisms

Syston is listed as being in the Barrow upon Soar registration district as is Barkby don't know if this helps

Hi Dianne

Doesnt look like the right family for me at the moment - It is possible of course that I am wrong about Maria being Thomas' sister.

However the Steel family that you have found is probably related in some way, so I am sure the info will be useful at some point in the futre.
Thank you.

Hi Margaret & Dianne

Thank you both so much for your help.

Margaret:
earlier - you gave me this:
Ann Ilston christened 15 May 1803, Barkby. Parents John Ilston & Mary.

Up until then, I had believed that MY Ann was born c1811. this would fit with the 1841 census, where she is listed as 30yrs.

I am struggling to make the dates fit for the birth of her dad etc if she was born in 1803.

Is it pos to take a look to see if there were any other births aroun 1810/11ish - for an Ann Illston please?

If Diane has sent a pm with information, it means that the rest of us don't know what's already been found so it's not worthwhile to keep looking.
