Hi Samantha,

Been reading your thread and you wondered what newspapers it may have been in.. There are several (I know that cos I used to live in Hayes and knows where Austin Road is it was 5 mins from my old house).

If you want, I can pop into Uxbridge Library which has all local papers (Hayes are included) So would you like me to look it up for you?

This is the article

AGED HAYES LADY'S FALL FROM BEDROOM WINDOW

The tragic end of a feeble old lady was heard at an inquest held at the Town Hall, Hayes, on Monday, on the body of Mrs Lucy Hammond aged 80, who was living with her daughter, Mrs Wharton, at 51 Austin Road, Hayes.
Mrs E. Wharton said her mother was 80 years old last birthday, and suffered from effects of a stroke. She had not been out of doors for twelve weeks, and her eye sight was not very good. Her mother went to bed on Thursday night, and as she had previously tried to leave her room witness had tied the door with string. Witness slept on the same floor, so that she could hear if her mother called. Her daughter, who slept on the ground floor, called her about two o'clock, and running downstairs to the floor she found her mother lying on the concrete beneath the bedroom window - a distance of about 25 feet.
In anwser to the coroner, witness said that owing to the weather she had taken care to see that the window was fastened before returning for the night.
Coroner: She was not a woman likely to take her own life? - No; she had never threatened to do so.
Do you think she may have thought she was going out of the door? - She never realised that that was her window.
Witness added that when she went upstairs she saw the window open. It would be very easy to fall out. Her mother had never tried to open the window previously. The doctor was sent for at once.
Mrs E. Green, granddaughter of the deceased, said she slept in the kitchen.
Coroner; What did yor hear? - something flew past the window, and i heard someone say, "put me to bed". As i called upstairs i heard a moan. Drawing the curtain i saw my grandmother lying on the concrete. She had her blouse and skirt no.
Dr. Hopkins said he found the old lady suffering from a head cut head. She was unconseions the folling day, and she died on Sunday morning. He did not detect any fracture, and was of the opinion that she died from cerebral hemorrnage.
The coroner returned a verdit of accidental death, adding that he was quite satisfied that it was not a case of suicide. He expected she thought she was going to get out of the door: once she opened the window it was easy to fall out. Her erlations could not have looked after her more carefully.
