Could someone please have a look at the censuses, 1841 and 1851 in particular, for Nicholas Troughton. He was married to Jane Johnstone, the only child i know about is John Troughton, baptised at Egremont, Cumbria, on the 18-12-1822. Nicholas married Jane at Cleator, Cumbria, on the 23-8-1818. Thank you, Wayne.

Hi Heather, yes i have found John, their son, on the 1851 census, although John was the head and there was no mention of his parents, i found them elsewhere, Familysearch to be precise.
p.s. i like your thread, can you see i've learnt from my mistakes???

Heather

Heather Report 7 Jan 2009 18:07

I can only find a Jane on her own in the 1841. She seems a bit long in the tooth though>? Was the IGI stuff submitted or extracted?

What was Nicks occupation? There is a Nick aged 45 in London in the 1841.

Wayne

Wayne Report 7 Jan 2009 18:10

No sorry Mel, thanks anyway but his son was born in 1822, this would make Nicholas 12, thank you anyway

Heather

Heather Report 7 Jan 2009 18:12

To be a bit precise, his son was baptised in 1822, thats not the same as born Wayne. Ive got people baptised at the time of their apprenticeships at 15 and others when they are grown men. Not saying this is the case here but keep an open mind re birth dates.

Possibly John boy in 1841? Remember ages rounded down to nearest 5 in the 1841 (usually)

Not with parents, a male servant

Wayne

Wayne Report 7 Jan 2009 18:22

The 2nd John i have ruled out before, he was born in Whitehaven, the first one sounds plausible though, he had family in Millom and later moved there

Blow me, yes there are dozens of them in Millon isnt there!

Do you think may be Nick had a different first name or used a different first name?

Wayne

Wayne Report 7 Jan 2009 18:32

I have seen them before and disregarded them because of Johns birth year, but like you say about the baptism date, it could be them, they tie in because they had a daughter, Martha, born around 1849, but they also had a son William, born in 1848, who lived until 1910

Heather

Heather Report 7 Jan 2009 18:33

Theres this one in 1851 born Cleator - if not your bloke, good chance related - he is a jouneyman blacksmith - says married but no sign of wife so he appears to be working away from his normal home (as journey men often did) but you have probably seen him already. Keep him handy though.

LOL ther are thousands of them in Cumbria, especially in around Millom.
Not sure about the name change, possibly

Heather

Heather Report 7 Jan 2009 18:40

Not so much a change as someone who perhaps uses his second name rather than his first - seems to happen so much

But you have a good clutch of them in that area. Id be very tempted to contact the local FHS and do a google search in case anyone has done a one name study of them.

Wayne

Wayne Report 7 Jan 2009 18:43

Thank you yes he is the same one that Mel found, must be some relation, somehow.
I will try googling him, you never know, thank you both for your help
regards
Wayne

Heather

Heather Report 7 Jan 2009 18:44

Try googling just the surname and the area. But the local Family History society should be able to help.

Wayne

Wayne Report 7 Jan 2009 18:45

I'll keep trying, thank you again
