Sally had another thread that turned out to be about something quite different, so I am starting this one for her to continue the question about Camilla's family.

great grandmother camilla von gfug
born 31 10 1892
died1969

married ernest grosvenor 1913

found him on the 1901 census aged 18
i think living in fulford yorks

not on 1891

cant find also great gandmother
not on any census

birthplace newport m 7a 1134

married ernest 1913 in grimsby 7a1262 jan to march

can you help
i have a bug for this now
thankyou sally

-------------------------------------------------

In the other thread, lulabelle added:

Possible 1901 census

Crig Cunson 39 Head Water Clerk Naturalized British Subject, Germany 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Annie 32 Wife ? Newport, Monmouthshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig William 10 Son ? Newport, Monmouthshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Camillia 8 Daughter ? Newport, Monmouthshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Annie 7 Daughter ? Bath, Somerset 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Alice 5 Daughter ? Barry, Glamorganshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Cuno 3 Son ? Barry, Glamorganshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Victor 2 Son ? Barry, Glamorganshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas
Crig Albert 6 M Son ? Barry, Glamorganshire 36 Merthys Street, St Nicholas

It looks like Von ???? on the original census page, but has probably been mistranscribed....maybe someone else can have a look and see.

I have had a look on the 1891 but can't see the family on there...again maybe someone who has an ancestry sub can do it on there...

-------------------------------------------------

Sally replied:

i was always told they came from prussia and were aristocracy
this seems fabrigrated now
thankyou
but the father seems german what do you think ?
thankyou for finding it for me sally

-------------------------------------------------

Sally -- Prussia was the old term for Germany, before our modern nation-states and borders.

It just sounds better when you say Prussian. ;)

So here's your new thread, and have at it!

Well, finding that at Ancestry was fun. Found Camillia by her first name and birth details.

Name: Camillia Cpig
Age in 1901: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Cunoson
Mother's Name: Annie
Where born: Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales

Civil Parish: Barry
Town: Barry
County/Island: Glamorgan

Cunoson Cpig 39
Annie Cpig 32
William Cpig 10
Camillia Cpig 8
Annie Cpig 7
Alice Cpig 5
Cuno Cpig 3
Victor Cpig 2
Albert Cpig 6 months

I'm agreeing with lulabelle that this is certainly them; will just check the image.

Well, it could say Cpig. ;)

But when you know what you're looking for, it says Gfug. Without question.

Well done, lulabelle.

Now, we need the parents' marriage? Must have been in Wales, since mother Annie was born in Monmouthshire.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 02:07

Oh yes, dad's name.

The "son" that has been added at the end of his given name is actually the "von" that goes in front of Gfug.

I don't know what I would read the given name as. Starts with a C.

Coud be Ceeno or Cuno ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 02:10

Brother with same name:

Births Sep 1897
Von Gfug Cuno Julius V Cardiff 11a 447

Sally -- just go back to FreeBMD and search for

all events
surname VON GFUG

and you'll see all the children's births.

But not the parents' marriage ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 02:15

Okay, now, to find the marriage, go to FreeBMD and search for

all events
surname VON G*
county Monmouthshire

It's been mistranscribed, of course.

So were various of the others -- you can see what they looked like before they were fixed at FreeBMD.

Von Gpug for Robert
Von G_ug for Camilla

Lucky they'd been fixed before you looked!

That's a very interesting name Annie had when she married Cuno. I guess it wasn't all that uncommon (looking at search results for the name at FreeBMD), I just have never heard it.

I don't see Annie's birth, though ...
I'll let you go looking for that one in the censuses.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 02:16

Margaret, Sally has the bug and I was going to let her get the actual search results herself. ;)

She's done marvellously well already for a total newbie!

edit -- ah, you're right, Camilla's hadn't been fixed, just Robert's.

Sally -- next you learn how to submit corrections and postems to FreeBMD. ;)

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 02:24

For ref, the details of the birth Sally referred to in the first post:

Year of Registration: 1914
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's Maiden Name: Von Gfug
District: Grimsby
County: Humberside, Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 1134

Yeah, go ahead and delete it -- leave something there though so you still have the thread marked!

I think Sally has retired for the night. This started here:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1133826

and turned out not to be about her grandmother at all. ;)

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 02:28

Hey Margaret -- how come you're not stuck in to the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster??

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1134367

There I go, spamming again. ;)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 14 Mar 2009 02:33

I don't know anything at all about the Bethnal Green Tube disaster. Maybe I should go and read the thread. It's a pretty long one though, isn't it?

OOO! Just when it was getting interesting! Do you think you'll get to that guy on the IGI for tomorrow's story??

Maureen

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 03:03

Oh, the suspense.

Sally: search the IGI.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

Select Germany for the region, and just search for the name of the person we know was born in Germany.

Oh my goodness, look at him!

What amazing luck.

Sally, you have to copy what you find into this thread.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 03:15

This is horrible, I can't be back here until latish tomorrow afternoon probably, and I'm going to miss your discoveries.

Once you've found the surprise in the IGI, Sally, google "von gfug".

http://www.google.co.uk

and look down near the bottom of the first page of results.

You never know ...

hi evie i knoe i started this search looking for leslies mothers name as i thought it was sad i didnt even know my grandmothers christian name. also i was looking for my father , my parents split in 1970 he wasnt even around for the birth of my sister alison. my mum died in 1983 6 weeks after amy was born and took all the jessup grosvenor history with her. i was never allowed to speak about him while she was alive. on my 21stbirthday my uncle david phoned out of the blue and said he had a pearl necklace that annie camiilla jessup had left me in her will to be given to me when i reached 21 . my mum had died the previous year and was the only child of my grandparents, who i know everything about. my uncle david jessup gave me my fathers address in 1984 and i contacted him ,but i was not ready and very fragile back then and i was scared of causing my grandparents more pain. iam now 46 years old and have no family left apart from my 3 children husband and sister and now uncle thanks yo you .but iam intrigued to find out about my fathers family . until last week i had never touched a computer and iam ok on basics i dont understand some of your terms . i live in devon now a long way from london where i was born i have been here for 25 years so i cant even visit graves or places which were familiar . ooh this is turnining into my life story and its taken me about thity mins to write anyway evie i will look forward to recieving your replies kind reards sally.

Okay Maureen -- go ahead and give Sally the details from the IGI. ;)

Sally, if you want to try again first, search the IGI like this:

given name CUNO
surname VON GFUG
region GERMANY

(You select the region from a list when you click the arrow under Region)

Don't fill in anything else.

Then click Search!
