Well, I've just found what Fanny did, she's done a good job.

Interesting that Florrie is from Birmingham too.

Here is Henry in 1901,,,with a new wife,,,,,,so Sarah must have died between 1891 and 1901.

Next of kin on enlistment.
Father Henry and 3 brothers and a sister.

It also gives details of his marriage and his first child.

This is him on 1901

So I presume he had to make himself "older"to enlist.

Fanny's birth also looks good. On the assumption that he lied about his year of birth, he probably didn't lie about his birth date, and by my reckoning he would have been born 5th March 1884.

There are no suitable registrations in the March Qtr 1884, so he must have been registered at the beginning of April.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 7 Jul 2010 00:07

Just spotted that Fanny's 1891 on Ancestry has Percy transcribed as Lucy, which is probably why I didn't find him. Excuses....

Fanny's Henry in 1881:

1881 England Census
about Henry Wright
Name: Henry Wright
Age: 24
Estimated birth year: abt 1857
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Birmingham

Civil parish: Pancras
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street Address: 106 Stanhope St
Condition as to marriage: Married
Education:

Employment status: View image
Occupation: Gunmaker

Registration district: Pancras
Sub-registration district: Regents Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 6b
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Henry Wright 24
Sarah Wright 25
Henry W. Wright 3
Frederick J. Wright

EDIT, Fanny already had this one!

I was impressed with my 1891 attempt because of all the children's names, but no, he isn't a gunmaker. Fanny's is much more likely, with Percy born about 1884!!!!

I imagine he was likely to be Percy Charles, as on the birth cert, and by the time your grandfather married he'd forgotten his dad's proper name, just knew that he and his brother had loadsa names and assumed his brother was named after dad.

No, nobody checked anything back then, people could lie about all sorts of things (or just get it plain wrong).

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Jul 2010 23:33

Except that Henry was a Gun Maker on the Marriage cert Meg?

And that is what he is on the 1881 and 1891 census I have posted.
Also Percy whatever his name may be really , says born Camden on 1911 and St Pancras on WW1 records and they are there in 1881?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Jul 2010 23:30

The Percy born in 1884 could well be him, just that he added a few years to his age when he left home?

But even if you never sort out his correct birth at least now I believe you have his parents.

I hope so anyway.
But you now need to look into it more and do more searching for him in 1901.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 6 Jul 2010 23:29

This Henry is a carman and corn merchant, but all the names are "familiar":

1901 England Census
about Ellen Wright
Name: Ellen Wright
Age: 37
Estimated birth year: abt 1864
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: Henry
Gender: Female
Where born: Chelsea, London, England

Civil parish: Chelsea
Ecclesiastical parish: St Luke
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Chelsea
Sub-registration district: Chelsea, South
ED, institution, or vessel: 9
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 312
Household Members: Name Age
Henry Wright 49
Ellen Wright 37
Frederick Wright 19
Ellen Wright 15
Charles Wright 14
Edward Wright 12
Arthur Wright 10
Walter Wright 18 (is 8)
Percy Wright 19 (is 9)
Alfred Wright 8
Robert Wright 3/12

The Frederick is the right age to be the one with the Powley family in 1911, but Percy is only 9, methinks he could have lied on marriage so as to be closer to Mary Ann's age.

EDIT, not the same family as Fanny has found. This Henry is born Northampton too.

EDIT probably the wrong family.

if that is henry percy father where is percy on the list born in 1879,or is it looking more like some porky pies been going on

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Jul 2010 23:22

His ww1 records are on Ancestry, but you will not find pictures of him.

Census will be on there too of course, but I was using Find My Past for it.

I do think this is the correct family as it has correct father and occupation for him,but which child he is will take some sorting out I think.

I am tired now but will have another look tomorrow.

But the occupation for Henry is what made it easier to search.

This is the birth of the Percy on 1891 census I believe.

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Jul 2010 23:15

People often changed their names about for various reasons and their birth places and also thier birth years.
Often because they couldnt remember,a lot were illiterate back then and going on the handwriting on WW1 records Percy/Frederick wasnt to good at writing etc.
