Well, I think you have all helped me solve the mystery! Thanks for your input everyone.

There were so many tin mines in that part of Cornwall at the time that I have lots of ancestors who were either tin miners or engineers - and there were lots of Trevithicks to sort through, many of whom lived around Sithney, Wendron, Breage or Helston which is very confusing because the parishes more or less butt up against each other!

My late father-in-law was a vicar with a soft heart who was sad that he was supposed to write illegitimate or even bastard in the marriage registers if someone didn't know their father.
I believe a lot of people he married had John Smith written in the father space!

He's been dead a long time so I can't tell him that is going to really confuse future family historians!

I've a couple of marriage certs for base children & both the mother's husband's forename is used with the bride/groom's surname

And it appears grandad is an "engineer" as the father John is shown to be on the cert.

Just an observance, but fathers always seem to be called "John" on the marriage cert when no father is listed on the birth cert.

Julie, seems like he has done what a lot of illegitimate people do - made up a dad for the wedding cert - it may be worth you having a look to see if any orders exist re payments to his mum from the dad. Also, the Cornish were always fond of using surnames as middle names, take it he hasnt got a middle name at all?

Who is the 19 year old in the above census?

Where was he born & where did he marry?

Julie

Julie Report 17 May 2008 17:43

I have copies of my grandfather's birth certificate and wedding certificate, and am now well and truly stuck.

My grandfather's name was Henry Trevithick, born 1878. On his birth certificate his mother is given as Mary Trevithick (Single) and no details given of his father, but on his wedding certificate, dated 1919, it states his father was John Trevithick (Deceased) Mine Engineer.

I've found Henry on a couple of census returns as living with Mary, who was still marked as Single, but I cannot find a connection between Henry and John, or John and Mary. Anyone have any bright ideas?
