I have found the death of my great grandfather who`s name was George Massie, he died in 1909 and the records show this way of spelling Massie.

Great grandmother Mary died after him, but I have trawled through from 1909 to 1938 and have found nothing. BUT, I thought I would try another way of spelling and used Massey. I found a Mary Massey, right place, right age at death in 1913, but would the spelling have gone unchallenged, ie....is this my Mary???

Thought much appreciated.

If the informant just stated the name, the registrar may have spelt it as he/she thought it was spelt.

Even in 1913 I would imagine that lots of names were spelt however the person recording it thought it should be spelt.

Thanks to you both, my thoughts exactly. I will bite the bullet and send for the cert.

If it's the right certificate it should say on it "widow of George"
