If so, do you know of a pub called The Volunteer? My ancestors 2nd wife (Julia Grange nee Burnell) ran it in 1891 before he met her, but Ive googled it and there's nothing at all.

hello Romany Star

Aldenham has no pubs now, only a social club. I went to St Albans Library the other week and if my memory serves me right the lord of the manor provided a pub/social club to keep the ag labs happy.

There is a Rifle Volunteer pub in nearby South Oxhey.

When I go to St Albans again I will find out more.

regards Jill

Thanks Jill, explains why I cant find it! It was there in 1891, but other than that Im unsure. It doesnt matter if you're busy, I was hoping to get a photo of it, Julia Grange was a widow with 5 children who ran the place practically single handedly, I have an image of her as a no-nonsence woman :-)
Thanks Jill.
