Thanks Jill, explains why I cant find it! It was there in 1891, but other than that Im unsure. It doesnt matter if you're busy, I was hoping to get a photo of it, Julia Grange was a widow with 5 children who ran the place practically single handedly, I have an image of her as a no-nonsence woman :-)

Aldenham has no pubs now, only a social club. I went to St Albans Library the other week and if my memory serves me right the lord of the manor provided a pub/social club to keep the ag labs happy.

There is a Rifle Volunteer pub in nearby South Oxhey.

When I go to St Albans again I will find out more.

If so, do you know of a pub called The Volunteer? My ancestors 2nd wife (Julia Grange nee Burnell) ran it in 1891 before he met her, but Ive googled it and there's nothing at all.
