I've just signed up for the Ancestry half-price sub. No problem. I previously had a sub but did not renew when it expired a couple of months ago.

I went to the site and logged myself out then typed in the web address that Heather had posted. After I selected the sub I wanted I was asked to log-on if I was already a member. Did not have to give a different e-mail address.

Hi guys

Just wanted to say thanks for the tip. I had a 3 month free membership with FTM which expired. I've now rejoined using the link given using my existing username and password - no problems.

Thanks again - you've saved me a fortune!

Best wishes

Miriam

Do you get much more info for your money with premium membership if you don't need the Irish bit

Heather

Heather Report 1 Jun 2009 22:13

Actually its a problem as Ive still got a few months to run - so do I lose those and rejoin or not, decisions decisions. In the meantime I also had some vouchers to use on tesco clubcard deals by the end of May and I bought a premium FTM program (which I dont need, got one already) but it did come with the 6 months free sub, which I can use after my present one runs out.

Pat Kendrick Report 2 Jun 2009 08:16

My subscription expires the 29th June. I phoned Ancestry yesterday and after a long conversation the outcome was.
I would have to receive an E-mail from Ancestry re the offer otherwise no way. He told me I was a good customer and yes it might seem unfair that I may not get the E-mail but he had put a note on my account page re this. I might get an E-mail in the next few days. If I don't receive it by the 29th June then I should phone them again. Excuse me please but the by the 29th June it will be to late to cancel my subscription.

I intend to phone again next week it just seems so unfair that they penalise their exsisting members.

Moan over.

Hi Pat,

Don't wait, act now! If you follow 'Tina the Cheshire Pussy Cat's' suggestion (first post, page two on this thread) You should be accepted. I'm not sure though if you will be able to upload your gedcom, I read on another site that after cancelling and re-joining someone wasn't able to upload their tree as Ancestry said 'that tree already exists'. I would imagine there's a way round this.

Good luck

I emailed them and complained about the fact that after years of continuous membership including upgrading to worldwide, I now find people are getting half price membership.I asked for an extension
The reply was dismissive, saying the offer is for new members only, they don't want to know.

Edit, so I emailed back and complained about the reply. I received an immediate reply

"This offer is valid for lapsed and new customers from the 2nd to the 30th of June 2009.

Thank you for your understanding.

Well they certainly don't have my understanding

I am a bit confused I have read and I quote Free trial for theGenealogist.co.uk it goes on to say TheGenealogist is giving a free 30 day trial subs throught its website. Am I correct in saying that this is Ancestry with a new name.

PME Report 3 Jun 2009 22:18

The Genelogist and Ancestry are I believe completely seperate companies, and Ancestry only do a 14 day trial.

My FTM six month subscription (pre-paid so not a 'real' member as such, no chance of them renewing as they had no card details) was due to run out on the 2nd July, I got the email, called them upgraded to World Wide at half price and its been extended till the 2nd July next year. I though had to call as the online link kept wanting to charge me full price.

I guess problems with uploading gedcoms, could be down to people not amending the file name before uploading it on a different account to their existing one, so it registers as being already loaded to the system.

Last year, following a hint on the Tips Board I cancelled my Ancestry sub before it was automatically renewed, waited 2 or 3 weeks and rang and asked them if they had any special offers on. I was told that they usually contacted lapsed members after whatever time they decided on. I told the chap on the line that I would like to rejoin but was not prepared to pay an extra tenner for the same service. I ended up paying £63 instead of the £83 it had gone up to - cheaper then my previous years sub. Not as good as half price but an alternative for those whose year has time to run

Have emailed Ancestry regarding half price membership
Here is there reply
Thank you for your email.

You need to click on the link in the email or go to www.ancestry.co.uk and click on the advert link.

This offer is valid for lapsed and new customers from the 2nd to the 30th of June 2009.

Not sure if this helps anyone or if only works if they send you an email .

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 9 Jun 2009 17:44

I emailed them twice about this, getting the same sort of reply as Marilyn. Then I phoned and got short shrift, the woman I was talking to said that she had had two other calls complaining about the same thing. She wouldn't budge, she just get saying that just because people were circumventing the system by signing up with a different email address, that didn't make it right. A sort of moral blackmail. In the end she said that all I could do was to make a complaint on the customer satisfaction system at the end of the call. She assured that if I left my name and telephone number, then the y would call me back. I did make the complaint and left my contact details, but guess what?

Yep, nothing....

Just seen this thread and am really annoyed at Ancestry. My membership finish on the 29 May and I rang them on the 28 May to cancel my subscription and ask at the time if I could get a discount or if there were any promotions coming up. Only after saying I could not afford the new amount she agreed on a 20% discount – no mention they where doing a half price membership starting the next day on the 29 May. I told Ancestry it was still too much money and I would have to save up for it and join later in the year. I did not get any email with this promotion from Ancestry and only by chance did I see it on MoneySavingExpert.com today. If I had not seen this discount I would off carry on saving to paid the full amount minus 20% discount. I have now joined with no problems using same username and email.

Just been trying to get the ancestry deal. I get the half price page up, fill in the form, then get a message saying it can't be processed. I am a lapsed customer, but never got an email, so maybe that's the reason.

Irene

Irene Report 21 Jun 2009 11:53

I think you have to use a different email address to get the half price offer. Perhaps another member of your families email address but in the same household is ok. Irene

I was a lapsed member and I signed up for the half price deal a few weeks ago using my usual e-mail address with no problem. I also logged in with my usual user name and password. I did not receive their e-mail either, just took the web address from this thread.
