Oooh, hello! What's this then?
It looks promising, but I've got to sit and think about it for a bit....
I'v eonly got George, John and Elizabeth as the children of Roseanna Norberry Edith Spinks and George Roath. I can't think what to look for until I get the marriage cert of Roseanna and George which will be posted on Nov 3rd.
Thanks so much, Maureen! i'm thinking - honest.
cheers

I've got James Roath age 15 on the 1871 census
son of John and Dessy Roath.
I have never looked up Rothe - I wonder why?

MaureeninNY Report 29 Oct 2009 16:16

John ROATH,not George??? (as Roseanna's husband)
That looks like the same family in 1861 and 1871-just minus James in 1861 and maybe a new wife..
I need to lie down.

If Stephen died, did Elizabeth remarry? Maybe a Mr Norberry?

Jilliflower Report 29 Oct 2009 17:16

I'm having trouble taking all this in! Thanks everyone for letting me confuse you.
Now then.... this is what I KNOW
John Roath b 1841 m Roseanna Norberry Edith Spinks Aug 1857
their son is
George Frederick Roath b 1857 (b cert) m. Alice Inwood 1882 (m cert)
his son is Bertram (Bertie) Roath b 1886 my granddad - I knew and loved him well.

The John Roath married to Dessey on the 1871 census is a red herring. He is not my proven relation but sprang to my attention because MY George and Alice called their daughter Dessey.

I am working from the top info and waiting for Rosanna and John's m cert.
HOWEVER I do believe there is ANOTHER George Frederick Roath born in North Wales.
Sigh.....
Thanks a lot everyone
cheers,
Jill

I'll leave you in peace "til the certs arrive, but just wanted to say that I think you'll find that your John ROATH married 3 times-first to Rose* who dies in 1869,then Dessey Sargent in 1870(she dies as Dessy ROATH) and then to Harriet Oakley in 1877.
Following them on the census isn't too bad as he always seems to turn up as a "burnisher" of some sort.

Good luck!!!

I am totally gob smacked Maureen!!!
Who would ever have thought it?
I've got to look at it spread out - or is it me that is spread out?
I think my head hurts, but in a nice way.
Thanks a heap!
Another giant leap for my kind...
I really can't wait for the cert now

Just a quick thought before I go:
There is a story in the Roath family of one of them being involved in a murder...........

Family stories are so obscure. I have one from my husbands family where a child was stolen but nobody knows who or when

Hurrah,Jill!!! It looks good!
I like the fact that the Norb*ry gang were living in Hill Street in 1851 and that's where Ros* says she was living on the marriage cert.

Just wish we could figure out where the Norbury name fits in.

I'll scream if you don't order Rose's birth cert.....
Best,
Maureen

Jilliflower

Jilliflower Report 4 Nov 2009 18:17

OK, OK, OK Maureen - I'll order it tomorrow!
Interesting that Hill ST is very near to Suffold ST where the family lived later - I think so - or it could have been the Roaths.
I'm still looking for the Norberry marriage of Elizabeth after Stephen Spinks died in 1845
cheers

So she was still called Elizabeth Spinks in 1857 as a witness at her daughter's marriage. I wonder if she ever did marry Norbury?

Could Elizabeth's maiden name be Norbury?

Jilliflower

Jilliflower Report 4 Nov 2009 18:49

Well, it's solid SPINKS on the marriage cert! BUT -
It doesn't say that Rosennah's father, Stephen Spinks, was deceased when she got married in 1857 so was that really THE Stephen Spinks who died in 1845?
It looks as if the Spinks children all took the name of Norbury on the 1851 census, and then reverted to their birth name when they were older.
Richard Spinks, 15 in the 1861 census ties in agewise with the Richard Norbury in the 1851 census.
Am I going round in circles here?

Where was Stephen Spinks in 1851 (unless that was his death?)

Can't find a birth for George Norbury c1850. That might help matters.

Have you got Elizabeth Spinks/Norbury on the 1861. I have been looking for a death for her but FreeBMD is playing up at the moment.
