Genealogy Chat

I'm struggling to find Dominick Gobby born about 1780s. He's on the 1841 census living with his 15 yr old son John. The census record shows his is living in district St Andrew (above the bars) enumeration District 7, Folio 14, page 21, line 19 GSU Roll 438786.

I know that Dominick died 1853 and at the time was living in Leather Lane which fits nicely with information I have found about him on the Old Bailey onliine website (he was a broker).

The problem I have is finding him on the 1851 census. I think I am having to go through the census by disctrict and each page but not sure how to start. The Ancestry site give the enumeration numbers of each district but I can't find the num 7. I assumed that the district number in 1841 would be the same in 1851. Can anyone advise please?

Thank you all so much. I lost my internet connection after posting so it was a nice surprise to see all the replies.

Somerset girl, I'm actually in Somerset this week on holiday (porlock weir) and taking a cheeky hour to try and find Dominick while husband is walking to Minehead. You've hit the jackpot and made my day (so far :-) ). Another connection of mine and I have suspected for a time that Dominick was Italian and you've just given us the proof.

Dominick was married to Harriet Hoole whose father was Alexander Hoole, a journeyman undertaker. Dominick was a broker in Leather Lane but both families continued to take on the undertaking work in subsequent years. Domick's grandson was an undertaker I think.
They were indeed married 1804 St Martins in the Field and had several children, most of which I found through IGI and then built up a more comprehensive picture from there.

Undertaking would appear to continue in the family throughout the Victorian era and into the 1900s.

Dominick and Harriet's sond Charles is my direct ancestor and he dabbled in a number of trades from milkman, butcher and cab driver but can be found in a newspaper in the later 1800s selling off what looks like hearses and accompanying horses.

Obviously, if Dominick was Italian the English Gobby line goes back no further than him, but thank you for your time and effort in finding all the details that you hav. I fear it will be many years before I will vbecome anywhere near as competent as many on here.

Now, if anyone could find any earlier Hooles or Chantrell's ;-) Chantrell being Isabella who married Charles Gobby. Her mother appears in the same Hatton Yard area and is called Phoebe living with son Matthew. I assume Phoebe is Isabella's mother but that's as far as I have been able to go and have been stuck for ages.

Somersetgirl, could you tell me how you found Dominic Gobby please?

If it wasn't for the enumeration details you gave I would never have found him because he is transcribed as Gateley on Ancestry. Obviously you are using something different to me.
