You could also try bastardy records. See if the mother claimed any payments for the child. This would have been done through the courts . I managed to find this for my Grandmother.
Try the records office that serves where she lived as a young baby.Long shot-but just may help

there are really only two faint possibilities of discovering the name of the father of an illegimate child

a) there is a family bible where the name has been noted down, and/or there are some family letters or diary

OR

b) the baby was baptised, the vicar knew the name of the father, AND the vicar was one of the few who would make a note in the margin of the church Parish Register.

In the latter case, that means you have to find out IF the baby was baptized, WHERE the baby was baptized, and then WHERE the Register is now held so that you can go and look in person at the register.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 28 Feb 2011 20:23

The birth cert will give her date of birth and her mothers name .In this instance she was illegitimate. and you can tell that by both surnames being the same.

There's no saying the birth IS her but its the only likely one

Not a good idea to add two threads on the same subject.

Stick to one. If members can help they will be checking the Trying To Find, Records and Tips Boards anyway

With no birth records then doubt you will find anything. Unusual for a grandad to take in ,maybe she was the illegitimate daughter of one of his children ,Or maybe he had a liason ??
