Hi,
Can someone help please...
I think I must be doing something wrong here, everyone else seems to able to find the names of children/siblings using batch No's on family search.
I put the last name and then the name of father and first name of mother and the batch No but seem to get zilch, please please someone tell me what I am doing wrong. :-S :-S
going greyer by the day with frustration!!

Ozibird Report 7 Jun 2011 21:16

Is this with a number of families or just one? If it's only one maybe there weren't any siblings or maybe they were christened elsewhere.

Flick Report 7 Jun 2011 21:27

Give us an example....so we can check for you

Can't hypothesise.............

However, can I just ask.............

Are you clicking on the Batch number on the original baptism record you have found, and THEN entering the surname plus the forenames of the parents?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jun 2011 21:43

It may be a case of too much info.

Once you get back before 1800, mother's name was commonly not recorded. Try using just father's name.

Or try just using surname. Batches aren't generally so big that you couldn't browse the results in not too much time.

As Flick says, give us an example.

But if this is about a thread you already have ... you know where to ask the question! You could add the link to the thread here.

wellybobs Report 7 Jun 2011 21:57

Hi,
Ozi I reckon it must be me, I have not found one yet who has any siblings, and given that most of them were big families I think that says it all.
Flick the one I am trying to find at the moment is siblings for John Bradbury, father Peter Bradbury (sometimes spelt as Bredbury/Breadbury) Mother Ann
born c 1802 Windle Lancashire Batch No CO 36662

OOOps I have been putting the names in search and then putting in the batch No. not clicking on the original from the record, is that whats wrong??

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jun 2011 22:06

It's the batch number that's wrong, WB.

It's C and then the rest are numbers, not letters: 036662

C036662 -- not CO46662 (and no spaces in it)

All batch numbers are one letter (C or M or I) followed by numbers.

search for Bradbury, father Peter, that batch number, British Isles

(no other info in the search)

and you'll be happy -- and glad you left the mother's name out. ;-)

Hi Janey,
It is loosly linked cos John Bradbury's wife was Elizabeth Greenall,if that is the thread you are referring to. This thread is not about Find Ancestor but about "what am I doing wrong" generally and I have only given John Bradbury as the example that Flick asked for.
Up to now I have not had any luck trying to find anyone with batch No's and other folk seem to find loads of stuff. Soooo I need to find out whats wrong.
thanks for taking the time to reply :-)

What I would advise is that you go back to the IGI, and try the procedure as outlined.........and you should get the result I did

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jun 2011 22:12

Flick ... I did give directions and kind of thought WB might like to do it personally ...

(We crossed in the post I guess WB -- go back and look above your post at my second one there.)

Flick

Flick Report 7 Jun 2011 22:15

I also gave directions, as I'm sure you noticed, Janey, but I though that, in this instance, proving it could be done would be beneficial.....and as you can also see, I have advised her to try it herself.

Doing the search by clicking on the batch number eliminates all possibility of entering incorrect batch data

Hey you two,
the posts did cross and yes I have tried it and guess what "Eureka"
(but not running through the streets naked no matter how happy I am with results)

A huge thank you and I love you both to bits-

Hi LA
many thanks, goodness how on earth are we supposed to know when they finished having children, maybe it was something to do with no TV or radio :-D

I just cannot get used to how good you "helpers" are at finding out things, maybe I lose patience and get frustrated so give up too soon.

Once again thank you so much for your time.
cheers. M.

wellybobs Report 21 Jun 2011 21:12

H all,
just when you thought I was gone for good, here I am again :-)

Can someone clarify this for me please, when you search on a batch No do you pick up anyone with the name of the father. the reason I am asking is because while trying to identify parents and siblings of Margaret Greenall (yes she has been on a linked thread, but this is somewhat different) I came across a father - Thomas Greenall batch No C007132 when I looked into this I got a list of children but there were three Mary Greenalls, one born 1793 one 1795 and one 1796 plus other named children. Is it likely these are from the same family??
The only explanation I could think of was either they belonged to a different Thomas or they had named subsequent babies after ones who had died, which is a sobering thought.
Advice will be much apprreciated. thanks M.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 21 Jun 2011 22:06

three mary's, 1 Margaret & 1 Richard in that batch with parents Thomas & Margaret

unfortunately the vicar was good at recording dob but no other details such as address or occ of father

it was very common to name the next child the same as one who had died so they could well be the same family

there are no other baptisms around that time for any Greenalls (or variants of the name) at St John's and unfortuantely burials are not online on lan-opc for those years

wellybobs

wellybobs Report 21 Jun 2011 22:43

Hi LA
many thanks for checking it out for me, I suppose that you get more used to brick walls the longer you do this, every time I take a step forward I seem to take two back.
I guess I will take it as the same family because if you could not find any baptisms for Greenalls then as sure as eggs are eggs I will not be able to :-S
Once again thanks for taking the time.
M.
