thanks to jan and jonesy for all your help. Obviously our messages were crossing. I do try to find the information for myself but this one really had me stumped.
You have both helped me to think about other possible connections so I am really grateful to you.
I will know where to come next time!!!

Hi again.

I think I may have solved this mystery. I will need to double check, but it looks like William Weeks and Maria Hallett were living as man and wife in 1901
William Weeks 35 drain flusher b Camberwell London
Maria 39 wife b Cobham Surrey
George 12 son b Camberwell
Harry 8 son b ditto
Willie 5 son b ditto
83 Marmont Road,Camberwell
Peckham is sub district
RG13 509/65/48 .
What do you think?

Jonesey Report 23 Aug 2011 09:54

That's a yes Jan. Look again at the surname on the original and compare the first letter to other capital "W's" and "H's" on the same page.

Aha! Spot on Jonesey, it does say Weeks on the 1901 image.
Eureka!

Incidentally, I looked at the army record for Harry hallett in Peckham and I don't think it is the right one.
Next of kin are shown as Richard and Sophia, parents, and William brother.
Maybe they are related?

Jan,

The occupation of the man that Maria is shown to be living with ties in with the man she married in 1914, I.E. Drain Flusher. As indeed does the man's age and birthplace.

Pretty sure that he is William Weekes.

I'm struggling here. It's possible maria was living with someone else if she was deserted, and she & the children took on his name. I did find this which kind of fits for her and the 3 sons though the birthplaces vary a bit (I don't think the surname is correct but can't make it out - Heaton maybe?). A very long shot!

Thank you very much Jonesey. I wasn't aware of the service record for Harry. I think the address may be a slight error as the family had connections with no.48 Blakes Rd. Then again it was not uncommon for other members of a family to live in the same street.

Many thanks for that.

I wasn't sure if I could post the full census entry or not but as you say, it does help to have all the details to hand.

Lynda, hope you don't mind but I am putting the 1911 and 1891 onto here - the info you give is spot on but I find it helps focus the mind to see it displayed on the census.

I am researching the Hallett family who were living in Peckham around 1900.
I have a marriage certificate for William Hallett b.1894 who married Nellie Green in 1916. His father is shown as George Hallett deceased, occupation Carman.
I found the family on the 1911 census and William's mother was shown as married and deserted. Whether they found out that George was dead or not I do not know, but his mother Maria married the lodger William Weeks in 1914 and William Weeks is a witness at her son William's marriage in 1916.
I have a copy of the parish record for Maria Bradley and George Hallett in 1889 which took place at St James Church Edmonton Middlesex. At that time George's occupation was shown as a butcher.
I found George and Maria and their eldest son George in Peckham on the 1891 census. However, George and Maria's place of birth is just shown as England.
I cannot find any of the family on the 1901 census. I have no idea if George had already deserted his family by then, but I have looked for Maria b.1861 in Surrey and each of her 3 sons George b.1889, Henry b.1892 and William b.1894 and I cannot find any of them.
From George and Maria's marriage record I know that George's father was also called George and he is shown as deceased at the time of the wedding.
How can I go further back?
Hope someone can help me with this one
