Hi Folks,

Ok - I give up! I get on to IGI and get a name and a date, but it still ends in nowhere :-(

If someone somewhere that might have a full set of idiot guides so that I can fully access all of the information, I would be forever thankful.
This is what happens when you turn 50 and the marbles go :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

Fingers crossed that you can help,

Jayne

Hi Jayne - do you want to tell us what you were looking up so we can see what we can find ....

Jayne

Jayne Report 13 Apr 2012 21:51

Hi MarieCeleste,
I can get on to the first part of the database and see who I am looking for, but can't get anything after that, yet others seem to fly away with lots of info.... and that's what I need to see, but haven't managed it yet...
Is there any "idiot guide" anywhere with all of the info is in one place?
I do feel daft having to ask for this, but I need to find how to do it ..
Thanks
Jayne

Jayne Report 13 Apr 2012 22:34

Hi again MarieCeleste,
From what I would like to find is ............ everything!!! But It looks like there isn't an idiot guide to find all of the info on IGI, but I will live in hope...........
And I really hope I haven't offended you with asking for this as you do a great job finding information for us all, but if it is possible, I would like to be able to find my ancestors for myself even though I am not able to find it for myself.
If you don't find anything that would help with this , I will wait and see if anyone comes up with the solution - but I will still need you and your colleagues help - probably for a long time!
Kindest regards
Jayne

MarieCeleste Report 14 Apr 2012 10:44

Jayne, of course I'm not offended!

I do appreciate you want to look things up for yourself (it's so much more satisfying) but the reason why I asked you for an example of something that you're trying to find is so we could have a look ourselves, post the results and then you could compare with what you found.

If we then seem to have more info than you then we could explain what we did to get that additional information.

Telling you how to do it is much more meaningful working from an actual example.

Why don't you start by copying onto here the information you are finding and telling us which site you got it from. Which version of FamilySearch are you using?

Hi MarieCeleste.
Ah, so sorry - I thought it was a no-goer on this one, so please accept my apologies for not getting back sooner. I thought it was a dead end..
The only one I can think of right now is John Ashmore 1816 King's Bromley Staffs and his wife Frances Bowen b. c1814 Hanbury Staffs.
I can wait for however long it takes to get all of the info to see if you can find how to do it for me (preferably in words of one syllable........ only kidding!) as I know you are very busy people helping numptys like me!
Thanks again,
Jayne :-)

Hi Jane, found this marriage on FreeREG which is a possibility

Notes All sign the register.
FileNumber 443

I find the best thing to do is tick the 'Soundex' box and not put a first name in just the surname.....Also, only choose the County you are interested in not a place.
This site doesn't yet work for all Counties and parishes within that County but when it does you can pick up some real little gems!!

Hope you think this is yours.....if it is give it a go and if it doesn't work for you I will try and talk you through it .

Hi Londonbelle,
Thanks for your reply, but I already have the info as my last contact, but thank you for looking this info up for me. What I need to know is how to get information from IGI (which I've had no success in getting the info past the home page..) and also Familysearch - yet again no full success.
Hopefully someone somewhere might have the key to help me with my quest.
Kind Regards
Jayne

LondonBelle Report 14 Apr 2012 19:53

All you are going to get on IGI is name & date .....for instance for John Ashmore's baptism which is what you most probably have already got is the following

JOHN ASHMORE Pedigree
Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
03 MAR 1816 Kings Bromley, Stafford, England
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: THOMAS ASHMORE Family
Mother: FRANCES

Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.

Can I ask what else you were expecting to find? :-)

Jayne Report 14 Apr 2012 20:54

Hi Londonbelle,
Thanks for the info, which, as you have said, I did have the info, but it's nice to be able to corroborate with what I have!
My quest to MarieCeleste was to help me negotiate websites such as IGI and Family Search and she was looking for the info on the Ashmores and Bowens in Staffordshire (names and dates - see the top of this thread) and was going to do an "idiots guide" for me.
I am a lady of a certain age and have difficulties finding information for my folks' tree but I would love to be able to achieve this so that I can find my relatives in earlier times than the 1800's. But I would still like to be able to do this myself, and would still look to your lovely GR folks if I got in a pickle.
Thanks for your help and hope that MarieCeleste will come up with what I need.
Kindest regards
Jayne

Oh Dear! I think my marbles must be going (I am of quite advanced years!) But I can't see where I said I was going to do an idiot's guide? Also, "she was looking for the info on the Ashmores and Bowens in Staffordshire (names and dates - see the top of this thread)" I really can't see that, unless it was on another thread?

What I suggested was that you copy onto here *exactly* what you found for a specific example and then we (not just I - it's team effort on here!) would compare what we found. That's what Londonbelle has done.

You said above "What I need to know is how to get information from IGI (which I've had no success in getting the info past the home page..)" I've previously asked what site are you using for IGI? You need to give us the name of the site and the site address (e.g. http://www.xxxxxxxxxx.xxx) so we can get to that homepage that you can't seem to get past.

Regards Family Search, well that's the only place where I would search IGI. Here's a good site explaining IGI

HIya,
I have been reading this thread and I think Jayne thinks she can access more info from IGI or familysearch...
Jayne doesn't resalise the info we find is a collection from all sites..

Jayne you need to post names and dates for anyone to help you..

Kellie

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Apr 2012 12:05

Exactly, Kellie.

This is how the site I've linked to in my post above describes IGI:

"The International Genealogical Index is exactly what it says - an INDEX. It should only be used in conjunction with other research. A copy of the original source document (such as the relevant parish register) referred to in the index should always be examined. Invariably it will contain more information and help you avoid any transcription errors."

When Jayne says other people are flying away with loads of info I'm not sure that the info seen in answers on this board are necessarily from the IGI. Many of us have subscriptions to various sites and it may be that some info is coming from them.

Jayne Report 15 Apr 2012 21:53

Hi MarieCeleste,
You really tried to help me to negotiate these websites (IGI and FamilySearch) for me, but it seems like there is no info to be able to search properly on my own - hopfeully! - yet ! But thank you for looking for me.
As I've said before, I am a complete numpty in trying to find how to access these websites and would love to be able to access this fully.
You earlier and very kindly asked for names I had to search this for me, which I did ( John Ashmore 1816 King's Bromley and Frances Bowen B. 1814c Hanbury Staffs. then LondonBelle tried to help (thanks) but I am still no further with my quest............
If there is any way that I could find the information to see what I would like to find for myself, I would be truly grateful. And I do feel like a complete numpty, which is quite embarrassing.....
If this is a no -goer , I will bow out and will try other websites (hopefully that other folks might have the answer), but thanks for your help, which I have appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Jayne

Jayne, I'm sorry but I've now asked twice for you to say which site you're trying to use.

You seem to be completely ignoring the questions I've asked. We really do want to help you and I feel that the problems you're having are more lack of familiarity with the sites - that's why I keep asking exactly what site are you using.
