LL,

As you have got a copy of the 1870 birth certificate of Lilly Maria have you followed up on the address where she was born or the address (If different) of the person who registered the birth?

Possibly they never actually married.
He was quite a bit older than her. Maybe he was already married, so not free & when she got pregnant, they moved in together as man & wife.
Might be worth looking for a previous marriage for him.

Hi Kath,

As far as the info I have I'm sure that's his name as it's on his daughter's birth & marriage certificate and 1881 census.

But thanks for looking anyway. I do appreciate your time and efforts, but it' is strange that neither of us can find it.

But thanks again, it's much appreciated.

Regards, Lou

Are you sure of Edward's first name? It is just that there is this marriage:-

Name: GODFREY, Maria
Registration district: Thanet
County: Kent
Year of registration: 1876
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912
Volume no: 2A
Page no: 1064

On the same page is James John Stokes.

I know it is out of the area and the name is wrong but it's all I can find.

I'm struggling to find the marriage of my 2 x great grandparents.

She was born Marion / Marian / Mary Ann Godfrey in 1852 London and he was Edward Stokes b 1843 Birmingham. Their 1st child was born in Birmingham in 1870 but I can't find the family in 1871 and I have her birth certificate which confirms her mother's maiden name.

I have tried free bmd / ancestry / and LDS with no luck.

Anyone have any other ideas please?

Thanks Lou
