I have just found a cousin whom I knew nothing about she is in her late eighties I don't want to shock her and I do not know if she knows anything. How would I approach her it will have to be by letter. thankyou

hi margaret
i sent a letter not long ago to my mums cousin he is 72
he didnt know anything about us
but he and his daughter was so pleased they had got the letter
they now want to meet us and share info and photos
so write a letter
and then its up to them if they want to get in touch with you

Send a letter, explain that you think you 'may' be related.

In the letter name the people who you think you might be related through.

And if you have any old photos of these people enclose copies of these too.

Try to keep the letter light - do not go into too much detail.

And enclose an S.A.E. so they can reply at no cost to themselves.

But after all this, do not be surprised if you receive no reply. And if you do not get a reply do not send anymore letters as this could be misconstrued and possibly frighten them.

However, the good thing is if they do contact you at that age she may be a wealth of information and possibly photos.

Perhaps you could add that if they don't feel able to reply, you totally understand but you would be very grateful if they could pass on your letter to another family member.

thank you for your replies I have sent a simple letter
just to see if it the right person and put in a S.A.E.

On looking her up I am quite sure she is a widow and they had no children also her ister has died and she was not married.
