Look on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. There is a Reginald Charles Goldsborough, Wiltshire regiment, died 10/3/1915 (Slight surname spelling variation).

Reginald was born in Strood Kent which is in the SE of England whereas Wiltshire is in the SW of England so don't think that Melksham one is him

Would seem if Reginald died before Florence she didnt remarry. You may have to do a process of elimination by getting some certs Ie the marriage certs of the children to see if he is listed as deceased on their certs.

Florence's death cert should say if she was wife or widow of.

I would be inclined to get the marriage cert of the last child who married to see what that says about Reginald

I agree that it is unlikely that someone from Kent would serve with a Wiltshire regiment, but I had an uncle born and bred in Birmingham who died serving with the West Surrey Queen's Royal Regiment, so we should be careful not to discount such a possibility.It was during WW2 so recruitment may have been different by then.

Surely this is the 'wrong' one, who dies in WW1, but Nicola has not got back, so immaterial;

Apologies for not replying sooner, but i am new to this and didn't realise i had any replies until i got an email!

Very many thanks to all for their efforts in trying to help with my elusive great grandad! I did have all this info, but am really grateful for all your help.

I too found the Reginald that died in the war but discounted him - i cannot remember why now :-)

One of his children, my grandad, married in 1941 and he is listed on that with no note that he is deceased. When Reginald's wife died in 1970 it states widow on her DC. I have asked my father if he remembers Reginald but he remembers being told he went off to america - i have heard that story a few times before for relations.

A good idea with getting the marriage certificate for his last child - who is still alive but I have no contact with - i shall try this angle.

I just thought someone out in the ether might know of him! Thank you again - what detectives you are.

Unfortunately, the fact that he is to shown as deceased on the marriage certificate is NOT definitive.

It depends on so much

.............. the vicar might not have been very clear in his question "Father's name". This does NOT necessarily mean "and is he still alive?"! So the answer might be just the name

.............. the child may not in fact know whether father is dead or alive.



Similarly, the fact that a father is shown as deceased is also not definitive!

No certificates have to be shown to prove it.
