i have found my mother's brothers and sisters birth records. i dont understand why they are all registered twice. once in my grandfathers name of cotterill and also my grandmothers name of Taylor. also i can find no marriage for my grandparents :-S

That is probably the reason the are registered twice, because the parents were not married

It still happens today

Have you checked to see if your grandfather or grandmother was married before?

Also, look for a much later marriage.

What are your grandparents' names?

Have you found your mother's birth reg? If she is just registered with her father's name and she was the youngest, perhaps her parents married between the birth of the next eldest child and her?

Is this a possible marriage for your grandparents?

They're actually only registered once - this reflects the fact they were only born once.
If you look at a b.cert from that era, say your own b.cert, you'll notice the child's surname is not given explicitly. It's left to be inferred from the name of their parents.
In the case of married parents, it will list the parents as John Smith and Mary Smith formerly Jones or whatever. One would presume the child will go by Smith.
In the case of unwed parents, the child's father is allowed to be named on the birth certificate only if he gives written permission. This is usually done by having him go to the rego office and jointly rego'ing the birth with the mum. In this case, the parents would usually appear as John Smith and Mary Jones. Now it's not clear which surname the child will be using, so the b.cert has 2 entries in the index, with each entry pointing to the same b.cert.

Rose - I don't agree - the other thread contains all the family info, but doesn't really address the question that Margaret asked in her opening post.

The fact that they were registered twice was mentioned in the other thread....so all Margaret needed to do was ask "why was that "on that thread instead, rather than start this one surely?
