Hello again,
I have to thank you for the Marriage Certificate which turns out to be correct as Gary has confirmed that Andrew's father Robert was a Fireman on the Manly Steam Ferries in Sydney. Did not think of this type of Fireman! I cannot remember who actually sent that to me now but a big thank you for all that digging plus the information abt. soldier records.

I have birth records from Australia for
Robert Howard Byers senior =
born 8th December 1853 NSW = died 15th Feb., 1933.

Robert Howard Byers Junior =
born l882 NSW = died 2nd Nov., 1944.

Would like to make a connection with Scotland - but not sure................
Could the "british subject" line be connected further back than parents. Maybe gt.grandparents. just thinking out loud....................not sure if any of this actually makes sense.

Found the mention of 14 Little Walker Street North Sydney -

Edward Byers lived here with Susannah nee McCulgan - he obtained a grant for a quarry at Milsons Point and supplied the stone for some of the Government buildings, portion of the masonry at Admiralty House being supplied by him.
HE LOST IT ALL GAMBLING.

I reckon there was a mistake with the name Burgess. I have seen this a couple of times on other branches of my tree.

I mentioned John Byers and Amelia - must be before Edward - not sure where they come in the line.

Guy says that there is a Byers Tree on Ancestry world trees - the contact a Ronald Hainsworth who apparently has done the work for somebody else - name not given. I am not a member of Ancestry so have no contact - Guy came to me as I have Duxons on tree in ancestry.

Hazel Report 20 Aug 2012 11:09

Guy also mentions a tree on Ancestry World tree's II have not looked at this because I do not have access to Ancestry, Apparently the contact name for the tree was Ronald Hainsworth, but apparently he is not related but had done the work for someone else - no name given.

The death record matches the information from Gary.

This is a comment on Gary's notes:
"not sure about the names on NSW-BDM marriage records, as I could not find anything for Edward Byers and Susannah McCulgan , only when I printed out (E.Burgess and S.Culgan) the date of l843 would be correct ( the NSW.BDM No. is
V1843179676/1843) Also tried contacting Scots church in Sydney regarding their marriage records - no reply the marriage date being l8th December 1843. Scotts Presbyterian Church Sydney."

Another comment was that they apparently held church services in their house.
Really still need to find out the occupation of Robert H.Byers Senior

If you can think of anything I need to ask Gary about please do make a suggestion.

Hazel. Packing - what packing !!!!

I think the family were from Canada, but I'm thinking British Commonwealth ....

Another thought and you may find interesting.
If you type into Google Byers of pei and Joseph Robinson - Wikipedia
Family storey about black jack came from Jamaica and Amelia from Virginia. This is all prior to Edward and Susannah. Gary sent me a photo of Amelia but I could not open it.
All this is what got me interested in the first place.

I did see your post it about Andrew Joseph Byers - didn't realise I was on the 2nd page of notes - you can see I need training - hope this does not give away my age ;-) The old grey cells need sharpening this morning. I am getting the hang of this now - I think!

Thanks for putting me right. Hazel.

I am beginning to think he was a bit of a lad - the marriage cert. does not say anything about Australia. On the l911 census it has a comment : British subject by parentage - is this a mistake by the enumerator what are your feelings as a lot of other stuff seems to add up.

Hazel - NO!! the marriage to Evelyn Mudie should be ignored, I added a later post to say that it appeared to be the marriage of an Andrew JOSEPH Byers.

My suspicion is that Andrew stayed in England. Will look more into finding a death.

Have a lovely time!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the information.
I will share with Guy my contact in Sydney.

In a nutshell is like this..............
Andrew Byers British Army 1906
Andrew Byers married to Beatrice G. Hamer 16th April 1906 Huddersfield uk
Ditto Eveylin M. Mudie 1921 Australia
I am also checking with Gary - the address in Walker Street sounds familier. Its in one of emails somewhere and had a quick look but will confirm

I am going away to Paris early tomorrow so all this is a bit hurried as in the middle of packing etc.
Thanks Hazel.
