I have just noticed that some of the 1921 census has been indexed and now searchable via Ancestry.
I have viewed a quite a few, and overall, the hand written returns are pretty awful resulting in many (understandable) mis-transcriptions !

Census returns from Quebec ( in French) are particularly bad !

Glad its not only me having trouble with the Quebec entries.

Walter Miles was transcribed as Watter Melia for goodness sake! I only found them because a married daughter was living as a seperate household in the same building.

I wonder if all enumerators were provided with a standard issue, thick black pen... LOL
My family of 4 in Quebec were all born in different countries,.
England, New Zealand, Canada and Scotland.

Angleterre: transcribed as Irelande
New Zealande: transcribed as: New Irelande
Ecosse : transcribed as Nova Scotia
The transcriber got the Quebec birth right! though !!

That's awful! If the transcibing was out-sourced to a non English speaking country, that's not surprising.

Come to think of it, wasn't there some talk that it was all done with recognition software?

Actually there are some who would say that Quebec is a non English speaking country! Driving in Quebec is a nightmare, no English signs.

As for Ecosse being transcribed as Nova Scotia, it's understandable since the French name for Nova Scotia is Nouvelle Ecosse. They have translated the Latin name to French.
