I have found the birth of a relative in 1924 but it has "see M'38 " could this have been an adoption? Thanks for any help

probably a re-registration of the birth .....................

often this is an indication that the parents may not have been married at the time of the birth but later married

OR an error might have been made at the time of the birth

If you are looking on freebmd, you should be able to click on "see M'38" and see what the change was.

The Meercat ......................

do you mean that there was an amended certificate yet you still got the original???

That's what this thread is about.

Otherwise, we all get the original full length birth certificate.

My relative was born John Nind in 1924 the fathers name was Frederick and the Mother Gladys. The mothers maiden name Smith. The parents were married at the time of the birth. The marriage did not last and the mother married a George Holbrook in 1937. John Nind somehow became john Holbrook and I am trying to find out if this was a legal name change or adoption as on original birth at the bottom of the page his name appears and beside it it says "see M38
Thanks for any advice and help !!

In other words, this is the original registration ...........

Births Jun 1924 (>99%)

Nind John Smith Windsor 2c 722 ?

looking at the image, you can see that the extra information is written at the bottom of the page

and this looks like the amended version ..................

Births Mar 1938 (>99%)

Nind John Smith Windsor 2c 680

you'd have to buy this second certificate to find out why the amendment.

Yes I got the original for my dads birth registered 5th may 1922.
At the side it says registered under the legitimacy act 1926 on 18th can't read the month 1929 and a signature.

Edit.
checked dads reregistered birth and it says 18th april 1929,So on the original the word I can't read is April

That is interesting!!

I wonder if it was an accident that the original certificate was not "taken our of circulation"?

The Meercat

The Meercat Report 3 Feb 2015 18:12

Ha ha could you see the original certificate I sent you then.

I just sent for it and got it so as far as i knew you could get the original like I did,
I surely can't be the only one who as sent for the original and got it.
