I was wondering if anyone could help me locate the mother and any siblings of William George Wilson?
On his marriage certificate to Barbara Joyce Miller in Heavitree February 1946, he is listed as being 25, living in Heavitree working as an A.B for Royal Navy and was the son of William Wilson, retired R.N.
I tried searching for birth records but there are so many Williams that were born then and i dont know where he was born (i thought in devon but when searching none crop up in devon) ive tried searching family trees online, navy records and electoral rolls for his address listed on the marriage certificate but no joy...

could anyone help point me in the right direction?

Any help would be muchly appreciated x

Welcome to the boards, N.

No help in identifying William, I'm afraid, but did notice Barbara's death, so thought I would just post it!
Haven't found Gloucester to be any help in tracing anything about William so far.

His birthplace will be on the death cert..................as known to the informant, whose knowledge you would have to hope was accurate

Look for a birth in OND 1920

He could, of course, have been born somewhere other than England/Wales

Looking at the Gov site for Wills there is an entry for a William George Wilson who died 3 March 1993 although it does not exactly fit the criteria as above, you could look at the rest of William Wilson's entries to see if any other entries are more applicable.

Just looked at all the William Wilson's Wills entry none seem to fit that death date.

If he was still in the navy in 1946 then maybe his naval records would be obtainable which may give more info on him

Hi

Who were the witnesses to the marriage and what is the name of Barbara's father please?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 27 Jul 2015 09:35

If you think the death is his.....you should get a copy of the cert

As Jacqueline has suggested, you need the death certificate and he may not have been born England/Wales. However if he was, then there are no births in OND 1920, but 2 reg in JFM 1921:

Births Mar 1921 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wilson William G Llewellyn Narberth 11a2693
Wilson William G Barnfather Carlisle 10b1080

I think the Narberth one had a father Melville L, as there is a marriage in same reg district in 1917

The Carlisle one appears to have these parents:

Marriages Jun 1920 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Barnfather Susan Wilson Carlisle 10b1509
Wilson William J Barnfather Carlisle 10b1509

He may be worth checking out, to find the father's occupation.

Thank you all...

Gin her father was Lewis (or Louis) Herbert Miller and the witnesses were Kenneth Wilson and Esther (what looks like) Westall.

Ive tried to search Naval records for both William George and his father William but cant seem to find any that fit? I used findmypast... would you say that is a good place to look for military records??

Military records post 1922 aren't on-line. You have to order them @ £30 from the MOD

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

It would be cheaper to purchase the certificates @ £9.25 each!

When ordering service records, you may be asked to prove that you are the next of kin

You won't find William G online but may find his father on the National archives site - they only go to 1923, but have enlistment details. Trouble is you have no idea where and when the father was born.

Searching AMD188 brings up 321 William Wilsons!

Jacqueline Report 28 Jul 2015 12:27

How can you find relatives when you don't know where the man was born?

Why don't you get the death cert?

n

n Report 28 Jul 2015 13:00

Relatives on his wife's side. I dont want to order the certificate when im not positive its not him? if i cannot find anyone i will have to order and keep my fingers crossed but ive ordered quite a few certificates recently so i'll have to wait a bit until i order the next one ;(

You say his daughter passed away, but have you checked her birth certificate for her fathers occupation or their address? Was she an only child, maybe if they had more children theirs could give further leads?

IF the age given on their marriage is correct he was born between Feb 1920 (whatever the marriage date was) and Feb 1921. The only births are the 2 I posted earlier and these 2:

Births Jun 1920 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wilson William G Forecast Bethnal G. 1c226
Wilson William G Woollen W.Ham 4a363

However, as you will know there were a further 2 reg in June 1921 if you allow for late registration, what date was the marriage?

Did William attend his daughter's wedding?

When did she die?
