Thanks, Peter. It doens't say a lot for my ancestors' memories. You would have thought they would have at least remembered having one child baptised. Unless they thought a double dose gave them more of a chance in this life and the next. Perhaps a curate was over zealous. Shelagh.

Yes, I've come across the same phenomenon although not as extreme as yours: as with your people there was a mass baptism and one child that had been christened some years earlier was done a second time. I suppose they forgot. Peter

I've recently been trawling through the Selby Abbey baptism registers. I have found entries for my ancestors (all siblings) recorded from1826 to 1839 and then same names with the same parents (same occupaton for the father) appear again in 1848 (all on the same date. When I asked staff at the archives if they could have somehow been baptised twice I was told that that wasn't possible, and there could be no mistakes in the registers. However, I've crossed referenced with the census details and cannot find a second family with the same names. Has anyone else come across this either in Selby or other parish registers? Is there a logical explanation? Shelagh
