can anyone tell me how to find out about an adoption that would have taken place about 1882. i dont know where to start looking so any help please , kathryn

Legal adoptions didnt start til 1927. Before that it was a private arrangement and the baby would just be handed over, without any paperwork. A rare exception to this would be an arrangement through a Solicitor, but this would only be for (probably) wealthy people. It would be sheer luck if you found anything in writing. Sorry to disappoint you. OC
