Hi all, does anybody know if a shipwright would have gone to sea, if so are his records traceable at Kew the same as a mariner? Duncan

Hi Duncan, according to Microsoft Works dictionary, a shipwright is 'someone who builds and repairs ships', so it doesn't seem as if he would actually have gone to sea. Cheers Bea.

Thanks Bea. I knew he repaired ships, but didn't know if it meant in a dock or running repairs. Thanks for reply. Duncan

Someone who builds ships might certainly go to sea. One situation where this happens is if the buyer of the ship wants to take it out for a test drive first. When HMS Thetis sank during trials in 1939 about a third of the lives lost were guys from Vickers Armstrong and Cammell Laird. I know someone who went to sea on sea trials several times whilst working for Parson's (who built turbines). However, I wouldn't think these builder's guys were thought of as mariners.

And my ship's carpenter (and his wife) moved about a lot - children born Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Norway, Scotland and Devon, then back to Norfolk after his wife died. As far as I can gather though, he was shore based. Jay
