And my ship's carpenter (and his wife) moved about a lot - children born Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Norway, Scotland and Devon, then back to Norfolk after his wife died. As far as I can gather though, he was shore based. Jay |

Someone who builds ships might certainly go to sea. One situation where this happens is if the buyer of the ship wants to take it out for a test drive first. When HMS Thetis sank during trials in 1939 about a third of the lives lost were guys from Vickers Armstrong and Cammell Laird. I know someone who went to sea on sea trials several times whilst working for Parson's (who built turbines). However, I wouldn't think these builder's guys were thought of as mariners. |

Thanks Bea. I knew he repaired ships, but didn't know if it meant in a dock or running repairs. Thanks for reply. Duncan |

Hi Duncan, according to Microsoft Works dictionary, a shipwright is 'someone who builds and repairs ships', so it doesn't seem as if he would actually have gone to sea. Cheers Bea. |

Hi all, does anybody know if a shipwright would have gone to sea, if so are his records traceable at Kew the same as a mariner? Duncan |
