I am trying to find the birth certificate of an Edith Barton who shows as born in London Stoke Newington on the 1891 census. She is 8 in that year so would be born about1883. There are several births of course for that time, but I am not sure on my districts in London and wondered if Hackney would possibly be the right one. Regards Kim

At that time Hackney covered Stoke Newington, so I would go with this one:- Edith Barton March qtr. 1883, Hackney, 1b, 499 Kath. x

Kim, If you know her parent's names, I would give them as checking points (although only if you are sure of them), so that you don't get the wrong certificate. Kath. x

Sometimes people made the mistake of stating in censuses where they GREW UP instead of where they were BORN, so be careful!

Slightly off subject, but possibly useful, this site has a map with the parishes outlined for London. It is helpful to "pin down" addresses given in the censuses for London.
