re census forms; what does do mean

Do means Ditto. Often used to indicate same surname. |

As said, it means Ditto - the same as above. Sometimes you get just the head of the family - say Jim Smith and then Do under the Smith for the rest of the family. You can get it for occupations or places of birth too. |
