Hello everyone Could anyone please explain why on my father's birth certificate, on the 1901 census and on my mother's death certificate my father's name is shown as Percy, this is the name my father was alway's known by but on the marriage register it show's Percival. Any idea's Also I know my father was in the army in WW1 I think he saw action in France but I am not sure. He lived in Edmonton, Middlesex would this have meant he would have been in the Middlesex regiment?. I was going to the record's office at Kew which is a bit of a journey, I do not mind going but I am worried that with so little information It would be a wasted journey pluss I know so many record's were lost in bombing raid's. Could anyone have any idea's about where I could make a start. Thank you Len |

HI Len Percy is short for Percival, so maybe he gave one name for one occasion but the full name for the other? Laura |

Have you searched all the censuses for your father? Have you searched ' institutions' ~ This is where more than 100 occupants could have been like, Army Barracks, workhouses, hospitals Etc. My Gt Grandad was in the army in 1881 he was from Norfolk and it says on the 1881 census that the street address was ~ nrth camp Aldershot A B&C lines, and that he was in the Private 56th Regiment at the time of the census and in Hartley Wintney Farnborough. Whether this was the ww1 or ww2, I don't know. I don't know where there are any military records online that you can search? Sorry I couldn't be of any more help!!! Hope you find what you are looking for. Kind Regards ~ Stella. |

Hello Laura, Jan and Stella Just a line to say thank you for your advice. I thought that you always had to use your full name on official document's including christian name's. Anyway I am glad I posted my message as I had three replie's, all from ladie's and I have never had that many get in touch with me in one go in my life, that made my day. Anyway thank you again. Best Wishes Len |

Len, Whilst not wishing to spoil your track record in only receiving responses from female members, I wondered if I may add something. WW1 medal card records are available on the National Archives documentsonline website. You may be able to locate Percy's details and get his regiment and number from that. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ I assume that your father's name is Percy (percival) BOLT. There are 5 hits for that name on the WW1 medal cards. By crossreference to the WW1 war dead listed on the CWGC website you should be able to exclude those who died. Also, the familyrelatives website has a pay-to-view database of soldiers of the Great War. Again, you may find his details there. https://www.familyrelatives.org/treequest/jsp/customer/index.jsp Pete |

Hi Len I thought the same! on official document's anyway. Would be strange if you put Len instead of Leonard. I know I've never put Barbie/Babs in place of Barbara ( use Babz on GR, don't tell anyone:-) In regards to your question. I would try to get more info to take to Kew before you decide to make the trip. Have you looked at the National Archives site and the Commonwealth War Graves site? You might be lucky finding the service records of Percy/Percival. Sounds like you would need to search for him using both names!? Have you found any info 'in the comfort of your own home' as they say. Good Luck Len! Babz |

Pete in Wiltshire Re WW1 medal record's. Hello Peter No I do not mind you spoiling my track record It was nice while it lasted. However I would like to thank you so much for the information you posted on the tip's board. I must admit I am struggling with my research and I am not afraid to admit I find it hard to take thing's in but because of people like you who have given me there help and support it give's me the encouragement to carry on. I am over the moon as I think the medal's record show's my father, Percy Bolt, Regiment 9170. I have eliminated two that died and as my father's middle name began with the letter R for Ray that elimanate's the other two. Once again thank you, you have made my day. Best Wishes Len |

Babz in Oz Re WW1 record's. Hello Babz Thank you so much for getting in touch with me regarding my search for information on my father's war record. A very kind gentleman named Peter got in touch with me and posted a copy of the WW1 medal record on the board and I believe I have found information that relate's to my father so now I have some information to take to Kew. At the moment I think I will wait for the weather to improve before I go as it is a bit of a journey from where I live and as I will be going by public transport it is not the kind of weather to be hanging around waiting for buse's and train's. For the time beeing I will take your advice and see what I can come up with on line in the warmth of my home. Once again thank you and take care. Best Wishes Len |

Feel free to make contact off the GR boards (click on my blue name) or add to this thread/request ... if I can help in any way, I will be pleased to. Do you have/need to find your Dad's family in any other census? or, are you mainly looking at finding his Service records ... Babz :-) |

Babz in Oz Hello Babz Thank you for your offer of further help if I need it. I think I will be needing quite a bit of help as I have not got a clue what I am doing. The problem is when I know people are busy with there own research I do not like to bother them by asking for help with mine. Anyway, yes I am trying to find information on my father's family and also on my mother's. I have found out some information from the 1901 census, date of birth's but that is all. Sadly I was born late in life and most of my parent's sister's and brother's and my grandparent's had died. My father never talked about his family to me and my mother died when I was two year's old so I do not know much about her family although I remember three aunt's, one on my father's side and two on my mother's. So I think that leave's me with around ten member's of mum and dad's family that I never knew and therefore I would like to find out about them. Anyway it will keep me busy. Well thank you again for your offer of help, take care. Best Wishes Len |
