.......... and ready to start climbing the walls!! I'm looking for James Walker who was born around 1843 in Northallerton (although there were a lot of Walkers in the surrounding villages that could be classed as Northallerton) and moved up towards the Durham area, where he married Ann. I have him living in Hutton Henry, in 1871 and his son John (b c1864) is my Gt Grandfather. The census shows him as being born in 1848, but this is a transcription error as the enumeration form shows his age as 28. Sadly, he's not the James Walker b 1833 in Maunby! Then he, and the rest of the family (apart from John) dissappear - it's as if they were abducted by aliens!! I believe he was still alive in 1881 as John's marriage certificate (1883) doesn't have 'deceased' on it. This really is a brick wall, and I am praying that someone, somewhere can help......... Do you have his marriage cert? What was his occupation in 1883? Where was John born?

I've got John's cert. He married in the reg Office Bishop Auckland in 1883. Dad shows as James who is an Agricultural Labourer. Haven't got James' marriage cert because I can't yet trace his marriage. The only one I've ruled out is it was not to Ann Dodsworth! John's birth on 1771 shows as Hutton henry, which is where they were living, but on 1901 it shows as Bishop Auckland. Thanks.......

There's this one... Marriages Jun 1855 LINSLIE Ann WALKER James Easington 10a 424 Which means he should be in 1861....

I looked at that one - but that would mean he got married when he was 12 or his age is totally wrong...... Ann Lislie was born around the right time, and in Hartlepool, which is very close to Hart. But I can't find them coming forward either!! I really appreciate this.....

Looking at the information in 1871, there's a 10 year gap between James and Ann which doesn't seem right to me. I do think that either the age is wrong, or they didn't marry till late 1860s.

His first child was born in 1862, so I would have guessed the date at around the very late 50's early 60's. However, his age....... And since I've only found him the once there is no corroborating evidence for anything. In fgact the only concrete fact I have is that his name is James and he was an agricultural labourer!! Everything else is supposition based on the 1871 census. I can only assume the family (apart from John) were together as it would be really strange for there to be a transcription error for all of them!! If only my name hadn't been Walker..........

Tony I have a suggestion.....one of my lot did this just vanished in to thin air......he was a miner and he went to America under a tied passage. Meaning he and the family got free passage but were tied to the coal company for 7 years after which they were free to return if they wished, my lot went back after this to Shropshire, bearing 2 children in USA then on the way home birthed my GGG Granny in Middlesex. All very confusing but I got there eventually, just a wee thought as anything was possible...good luck

I will because I know how frustrated I was and my lot were called Evans so it was no mean feat lol Taught me to keep an open mind as they walked a lot...also don't close your eyes to the Scottish census as some moved to all sorts of places to work. Hi Sue, I found them and they are definite possibles - but i can't find them in later census .......... all of ythe walkers appear once and then *poooooof * they're gone!! Thanks for looking though! I'm dredging through the passenger lists (no pun intended there...) at the moment! T

Thanks again Sue. I'm going to have to spend a lot of time (and patience) looking for James, I think. The trouble is I haven't really got anything concrete to start with. I'm not convinced the details on the 1871 census are right, and there are just so many James Walkers. I really appreciate all of the help.........

I have feeling that this is the family.....but I don't know why!!! Walker has probably been transcribed as Smith or something....
