My gggrandfather was born in 1811 in Ireland. The 1850 New Jersey, USA census shows his profession as teacher. By 1856 he owned a 'fancy goods' establishment in Toronto, Canada (the shop stayed in the family for two generations)....I can't find his original immigration record....Perhaps he left Ireland as a farmer or labourer???? Any suggestions of how to find his immigration greatly appreciated.

Hi Lisa try putting his name on this Ancestry page. It may not locate him but it is somewhere to start. http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=5969 Remove the brackets. Apart from that I have no idea. Good luck! I am hoping for a reply to my thread about emigrants coming home. Rose

Hi Rose. We've tried that, sadly with no luck. I'd really like to find him and have tried all kinds of name variations. Thank you for your help, though, it's appreciated. :)
