I think my grandfather's younger sisters and brother must have gone into Hull Workhouse when they were orphaned in April 1901 (after the 1901 census). Fortunately for him (and me!) my grandfather was 15 when he was orphaned and went into the army, was taught music there and became a professional musician. I know his youngest sister died in Hull Workhouse age 13 in 1903 from cardiac dropsy, whatever that is. This is the year their eldest sister married (aged 19), the second sister married in 1905 (aged 19), but I can't find any trace of their younger (or elder brother who was almost 21 when his mother died - father died some years previously) I presume that as he was in work at the time, as was the eldest girl, they didn't have to go to the workhouse. If not, I wonder why they didn't look after the 2 young ones. However, the point is that the workhouse site for Hull only shows inmates at the 1881 census, so no good for me to look for my relatives. Does anyone know if they are only listed in a census year, or if in time, a list of all inmates will be available. I live a very long way from Hull to look at their archives. I've tried contacting the archive office, but all I have so far is a number! When they didn't reply after a couple of months I re-contacted them and was given another number, so no help from that quarter.

In Liskeard museum they have something about Lamellion workhouses and the standard of care there seemed well above the norm. The rules on bathing were fasinating.eg, water must be of a certain temperature, frail people were to be handled with care and could have as many as two baths a week if desired and a fresh towel used for every patient etc etc. I should think the conditions were perhaps better than some had in their own homes. Seeing that really cheered me. (Not that I have yet found any of mine in a workhouse so far). M

Susanne & Jane, Your mentions of Toxteth Park Workhouse caught my eye. Mr husband's gt.grandfather was assistant master there in 1871. 19 other members of staff are mentioned on the same census page - Detail: Class: RG10; Piece: 3806; Folio: 118; Page: 1; GSU roll: 841907. Jo
