Member Since: May 2003 Posts: 78 Send Message	one of my grandfathers served in the army until 1898 after 10 years service. i have recebtly been in contact with a distant cousin who thinks he may have been called up for the boer war at the turn of the century if this is the case where would i find a record of this?

Member Since: May 2004 Posts: 2,077 Send Message	Conscription didn't start until 1916, but he may have volunteered. The National Archives hold comprehensive records for the Boer War - in many cases better than the First World War, but you'll probably have to visit in person. There's a very strong possibility that you'll find his service papers, even the pre-Boer War period. If you do go, be prepared for a long search - the papers are held in boxes and not in strict alphabetical order.
