Conscription didn't start until 1916, but he may have volunteered. The National Archives hold comprehensive records for the Boer War - in many cases better than the First World War, but you'll probably have to visit in person. There's a very strong possibility that you'll find his service papers, even the pre-Boer War period. If you do go, be prepared for a long search - the papers are held in boxes and not in strict alphabetical order.

Hi Christopher, it's me again. Have you tried www(.)pro(.)gov(.)uk? I found my 2xgreat-grandfather's naval record on there. ps Don't forget to remove the brackets.

one of my grandfathers served in the army until 1898 after 10 years service. i have recebtly been in contact with a distant cousin who thinks he may have been called up for the boer war at the turn of the century if this is the case where would i find a record of this?
