Patricia Just found a marriage for Sidney. A .Smith to Emily A Gardner A/M/J 1927 Birmingham 6a 1172. This sounds promising. His 2nd name could have been Albert I also found a marriage for Sidney Smith to ? Fajarkarley J/A/S 1925 6d 1420 Now its a matter of finding your dad. The one I found had Haitt as his mother. I will have another look and see what I can find By the way I went to school in Birmingham to Sir Josiah Masons Orphanage, do you know of it. I live in Kent but go every year to the reunions. John

You can apply for his birth certificate through the GRO quoting the date of birth and give his father's name. Send a covering letter with it with any other details you have about him. It costs more - £11.50 and it takes longer. I sent off for my grandfather's birth cert this way as could not find him on listings but my cousin found dob on RAF records. I sent it off over 3 weeks ago - rang them Friday - and it is due to be sent out in next couple of days (she did say nothing had come up in the refund box). I still have my fingers crossed - but if you have his dob it has to be worth it. If you're not 100% sure of dob - the GRO can search a three year period for him. Jill

Hi Patricia, I can't find my birth record on BMD either, how ever when i went to local records office i am there in sept quarter,even though i was born in june. Julie

The SMITH marriage that cross checks with HIATT, same reference, was for an Alfred SMITH. Gwyn

Hi Patricia Another thought, if you go on to Ancestry as I said, you will find years that go up to 2003, its in small letters at the bottom, I think. Then you should be able to find you birth registeration Have a go, if you can't get on the site then let me know. John

Hi Patricia Just tried to cross reference Sydney Smith for marriage on 6d 88 and he was not listed so possibly its the wrong couple or maybe he had another christian name. Try Ancestry.co.uk on BMD and you may find it but with the name of Smith its a long job, just like my Lewis's. still can't find the right birth cert for my grandad. Like looking for a needle in a haystack. I will keep looking for you and will still keep in touch, possibly not tomorrow John

I am really puzzled - have you not got a copy of your own birth cert? If not, why not, what did your mum do with it?! I take it your parents were married - if not, then you will have been registered in your mum's maiden name. OC

Hi Patricia Have you tried Ancestry.co.uk, the BMD are free, I found a Albert J Smith b 1928 mothers name Hiatt is that the one I only looked under Albert for there is a long list of Smiths but you could find a death at the same time if she died at childbirth. If I get some time I will have a look . John

patricia post your dads details on the records office threads ask if someone can find his birth or any other info dont forget to mention his mum dying in childbirth give it a go and good luck berni
