Francis Farish was born in Cumberland c 1866 and I have him on all the censuses except the 1901. I'm not sure if he is hiding, or whether he is genuinely not there, but I know he must be somewhere because he married in 1902 - so he's not dead! In 1891 he was described as a marine engine fitter so I'm wondering if he was at sea in 1901. Would a marine engine fitter go to sea? Could he have done a turn as a ship's engineer? Does the census cover the Merchant Navy? Anybody got any ideas? Thanks in anticipation Sheila

Brilliant! Thank you so much. If you look closely the housekeeper is actually Catherine McCourt, who he married the following year! Was he being a naughty boy? Thanks again Sheila
