If there is a Carrington link, there is a good chance that one of them signed as a witness at Abraham's wedding, I'd guess. Gwyn |

From 1901 Name: John Carrington Age: 57 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844 Relation: Head Spouses's Name: Ellen Gender: Male Where born: Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: Odd Rode Ecclesiastical parish: All Saints Town: Rode Heath County/Island: Cheshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Congleton Sub-registration district: Sandbach ED, institution, or vessel: 4 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 29 Household Members: Name Age Arthur Carrington 12 Ellen Carrington 51 George Carrington 18 Isaac Carrington 8 John Carrington 57 Louisa Carrington 14 Sarah Carrington 10 Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 3351; Folio: 68; Page: 6. Seems like they swapped about between Staffordshire and Cheshire. I was just pondering on the Ellen E significance, perhaps she was Ellen Elizabeth or Elizabeth Ellen. |

If there was no father named on birth cert then Abraham's surname would be that of his mother ie Preston, I assume you mean the two names Abraham Sparrow were recorded in the box for child's name these would both be his forenames, though as someone above said, it could be he was given the name Sparrow as a way of showing his father's name it could equally be a family name passed on. It was quite common for children to be known by a step father's surname for everyday purposes thus saving having to explain why one child has different name from rest and admitting to illegitimacy, hence Carrington on the census, but to use their official name on marriage and later in life. Hmm, I just found that 1891 entry as well. Coincidence that Ellen E has same age and place of birth as Elizabeth. Could it still be the same wife but using her second name so as to distinguish between herself and daughter Elizabeth? |

LOL Barrow - too much Sparrow talk! mmmm - just trying to locate the Carrington's after 1871. The age of the Elizabeth would fit with the Elizabeth Preston born 1849 - daughter of George from 1861. Alex |

Hi Alex, Sparrow was the name he was registered in, but his birth also records a double barrow name of sparrow preston. Julie |

Might be worth ordering the certificate of that marriage to see who her father was. It certainly would add up. Maybe Sparrow is a surname from Elizabeth's family, like her mothers maiden name or something? |

By 1881 John and ELizabeth had moved to Odd Rode, Cheshire and had Susan aged 11 and two younger children, John 7,Albert 3 and Elizabeth 7 months with them. No sign of Abraham who at 13 or 14 was old enough to be working away from home I suppose. |

i have checked the birt cert again, i made a mistake it was the registrar's signature, not name entered after registration. Abraham was recorded as marrying in the name of sparrow preston, so i don't know if he would have used the name carrington. I am proper swearing at my ancestors at the moment nothing is ever simple with my family lol. Julie |

I think Sarah Gutteridge will be down as 'occupier' rather than 'occupies'. It means that she was the owner or tenant of the house where the birth took place, and if the baby's mother was unable or unwilling to register the birth, the 'occupier' of the premises would do it instead. As for name added after registration, it makes sense if the mother didn't register the birth herself; maybe when Sarah got back Elizabeth said, 'But he was supposed to be have Sparrow as a middle name!' or whatever, and she went and got it added? Kate. |

When you say it has a name entered after registration - do you mean that the 'Sparrow' was added after registration or another name? Alex |
