Tower Hamlets say they charge £18 for a search......: Family searches If you are trying to trace the birth, marriage or death certificate of a family member, a good place to start is at the library nearest to where the event took place (see information about Tower Hamlets history and archives library). All the information available there is free and may confirm the existence of a certificate. You can also ask for a family history search at the register office but there is a fee of £18. This service does not guarantee a certificate unless you have confirmed its existence through your own research. Marriage, death and full birth certificates cost £7 each. Short birth certificates cost £5.50 each. All cheques and postal orders to be made payable to Superintendent Registrar. You can contact the Tower Hamlets Register Office for more information but we regret that we cannot carry out searches over the phone. If you are unsure of the place where the birth, marriage or death event took place, you can apply to the Family Records Centre in Islington, London. They hold the birth, death and marriage records for the whole of England and Wales. They go as far back as 1837. Merry

I think the site you have been redirected to is BMD-Certificates(.)co.uk. Don't use them - the price is £25. Use the GRO instead. Kath. x

Merry Report 4 Sep 2006 12:19

It's because they charge £18 for the search and £7 for the cert = £25 Merry

What a con , I could buy nearly 4 with that money, Glen you have redeemed yourself I will forget about the overnight stay charge being exorbitant. Thanks for all replies I shall be more careful in future.

the thing is Merry I know all the details , so no search necessary.

Merry Report 4 Sep 2006 12:23

Imagine how long it would take them to do the search though, compared with the GRO?? merry

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 4 Sep 2006 12:27

Marriage certs are slightly different to births. The register is compiled by venue and not by names. So to find the marriage the registrar must search each venue. If you know where it helps them by reducing the search, they can go straight to the right book. The thing is if you know which church/chapel was used you probably don't need the cert. If there are a lot of possible venues they prefer not to supply the cert due to the time taken for the search,(it has happened to me a time or two). Then i did use the GRO just to make the job easier, but not by choice.Grrrr Glen
