Hi - I'm sorting through my family tree, and I'm filling out Family Group Records; the only trouble I'm finding is working out the relationships betwen myself and previous ancestors - such as my 5xgreat-grandfather's brother's grandchildren! I've found a Genealogy Relationship Chart on the Internet but I don't find it that east to use! Any help with this would be most welcome! Jordan |

I think your 5 x great grandfather's brother would be your 6 x great uncle.:- Your Father's brother = uncle Grandfather's brother = great uncle Great grandfather's brother = 2 x great uncle 2 x great grandfather's brother = 3 x great uncle 3 x great grandfather's brother = 4 x great uncle 4 x great grandfather's brother = 5 x great uncle 5 x great grandfather's brother = 6 x great uncle Kath. x |

Not certain of this but I think they would be second cousins, 5 times removed. Someone else might check that for you. Kath. x |

I did that in my head, lol. I have just checked it on a relationship calculator and I was right - second cousins, 5 times removed. Kath. x |

So my 5xgreat-grandfather's brother is my 6xgreat-uncle, who's children are my 2nd cousins 4x removed, and their children are my 2nd cousins 5xremoved, right? |

You need to find your common ancestor. This would be your 6 x great grandfather, as he is the father of your 5 x great grandfather AND your 6 x great uncle (these two are brothers) The children of these two brothers would be cousins. The grandchildren of these two brothers would be second cousins. Then you count down from them how many extra generations you are from them and it is 5 - so you are 5 x removed, from second cousins. Does this make sense??? LOL Kath. x |

I don't think you are getting this, lol Your 6 x great uncles:- children would be your cousins 6 x removed His grandchildren - second cousins 5 x removed His great grandchildren - third cousins 4 times removed His 2 x great grandchildren - fourth cousins 3 times removed His 3 x great grandchildren - fifth cousins 2 times removed His 4 x great grandchildren - sixth cousins once removed His 5 x great grandchildren - seventh cousins Kath. x |

Looking at the chart I've got , If I select 6th Great Grandson underneath common ancestor, then move across to son or daughter, I getg 5th Great Grand Nephew, not 1st cousin 6 times removed. Am I reading it incorrectly? |
